LETTER: Tax decisions

In regard to Catherine Rampell’s April 24 column:

As I am to understand, the Department of Education will be allocated to the states, where the curriculum and funding will be decided by the citizens.

Would this not correct the issues brought up by Ms. Rampell? This is one point which she addressed when talking of the need for head start.

In conjunction with any taxes, can’t we consider the need to be met by donations?

As much as I respect, utilize and support the services of libraries, museums, public broadcasts and food banks, why must they be funded by the federal government?

As I remember, Carnegie donated grants to build libraries, and they were sustained by fines.

Other cultural opportunities were carried on by grants, subscriptions and donations.

Perhaps our current culture does not consider the need for such enterprises, but how about letting the citizens of each state decide how their taxes should be allocated.

When I see the ads for Tunnel To Tower, I always question why this organization, which supports our first responders and defenders of our nation, must depend entirely on donations.
