LETTER: Support legislation to protect state’s environment

Support initiatives

As a Clallam County resident who loves our wonderful corner of the world, I am concerned about the changes in our environment that directly impact the place we call home.

Our changing climate will not just affect our forests and our oceans but will have a detrimental impact on the industries that rely on these natural resources.

There is a balance that is being perpetually threatened, but we finally have a chance to make a change.

Our state is uniquely positioned to lead the way and act on climate in this session by passing a Clean Fuels Standard (HB 1110, SB 5412).

Further, we can join a nationwide movement of committing to 100-percent clean electricity with passage of strong HB 1211 and SB 5116 bills.

A future free from the reliance on fossil fuels must encourage safe practices that protect our coast from oil spills and exploration.

HB 1578 and SB 5578 seek to improve safety measures, enhance oil spill prevention tools and ensure that offshore drilling never happens on Washington’s coast.

It would be a tragedy to jeopardize the health of our marine ecosystem for benefit of a needless endeavor.

Sustainable energy will bring a new economy to our communities, providing living wage jobs.

The possibilities are endless once we move away from the fossil fuel economies and into the future with renewables.

I implore Sen. Kevin Van De Wege, Rep. Mike Chapman and Rep. Steve Tharinger to ensure the passage of these bills.

The well-being of our future depends on our actions this session.

Nessa Goldman,

Sequim
