LETTER: Recent letter writer obfuscates facts in flouride study

Unfortunately, another letter writer is not the only person who can read fluoride-related magazine articles.

The misleading statistics a writer cited in her Oct. 30 letter in Peninsula Voices (“Pregnancy, fluoride”), from the September edition of Environmental Health Perspectives, involved a study in Mexico of drinking water that in no way had been treated with cavity-fighting fluoride.

The report referred to untreated drinking water that contained the kind of naturally occurring fluoride found in ground water.

Such water bears no resemblance to fluoride-treated drinking water supplied by cities in the United States.

As the study states, “Mean fluoride content for Mexico City’s water supply is not available because fluoride is not reported as part of water quality control programs in Mexico.”

The report is available online at https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/ehp655.

As usual, a writer has chosen to avoid the facts.
