LETTER: Power of the people

Since the election, towns across the Olympic Peninsula have seen increasingly large street gatherings to protest the cruel actions of the White House and its rapid-fire dismantling of democratic institutions.

People who had never imagined taking to the streets in protest have recognized the steady march toward dictatorship and have stepped up.

Will you?

Two centuries ago, America said, “No Kings!“

On June 14, we did it again.

While Trump enjoyed a Soviet-style military parade, tanks and all, through the streets of our country’s capital, celebrating his own ego and fragile power, millions of us voiced our resistance.

We don’t all agree on the fine points of government, but in the face of what is happening now, we can stand together on some simple principles: we will not stand by while long-standing, essential rights such as due process are cast aside, and we are not OK with an all-powerful dictator.

Authoritarians like Trump want us to feel alone, fearful and powerless, and that our voices have no impact.

But history has shown that the one force that can vanquish tyranny is the power of the people.

All of us, together, can be that force.

We won’t win tomorrow or next week, but we will win.
