LETTER: Outdated buildings

I have taught in several districts around the state and Port Angeles school buildings are the worst in which I’ve ever taught.

And to be clear, it’s not because of poor maintenance of said buildings, but because of the outdated, unsafe and deteriorating infrastructure of them.

For instance, other schools around the state are asbestos-free while our schools are not.

Other schools have electrical wiring that is up to code while our buildings do not.

Other schools are earthquake resistant while our school buildings are not seismically safe.

Other, newer, school buildings have one main entry to prevent intruders while our middle and high school buildings have dozens of entry points.

Other schools around the state have science labs that are safe and updated so students who love science can conduct experiments; in comparison, our labs are antiquated and, in some cases, dangerous.

Other schools have the infrastructure for Career and Technology students to build, create and compete with other school districts who also have the infrastructure; our district’s buildings do not have this same capacity.

For these reasons and more, this capital levy is exceptionally needed.

Is it expensive?

Yes.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely.

Please vote yes so we have the necessary technology and infrastructure to ensure Port Angeles kids are successful in the 21st century.
