LETTER: Opposes the destruction of historic monuments

It’s sad to see the destruction of historic statues but, with reservations, I understand the sentiment of wanting to remove them.

However, they are historic works of art and a part of our history.

Tearing down statues does not change history.

Wouldn’t it be better to attach an information plaque to each one detailing the year the statue was erected and the history of the individual for whom it was created?

It would be historically enlightening, preserve works of art and expose the monuments for what they were.

Even if they’re removed from their current locations, they could be moved to a “Historical Monument Museum” with detailed plaques and brochures detailing/exposing them for what they were in times that were much different than current days.

It would be educational instead of promoting more hate.

I’m confused and saddened that anyone would be offended by statues of Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Jefferson Davis, et. al.

Slavery was a fact, prejudice exists and always will in all races, but burning buildings, maligning all police, destroying businesses and looting will not change history nor will removing beautiful works of art.
