LETTER: Opposes school levy

Instead of replacing old, inefficient, electrical, plumbing systems, heating, and flooring, Port Angeles School District wants approval for a 175 percent property tax increase, $52 million to demolish and replace part of Stevens Middle School with new buildings.

If natural or accidental property destruction is disadvantageous, why would intentional public property destruction become advantageous?

Though victims may not suffer bodily or emotional harm, whenever natural or man-made disaster destroys private or public property, do we sympathize for losses?

To satisfy more needs and, sometimes, satisfy wants such as a visit to distant grandparents or music lessons, using common sense to best provide for themselves and their families, wise individuals replace only what needs replacement.

What consequences does destruction generate for people who would have received payment for services or products they won’t sell because of funds diverted to replace a loss?

Are PASD planners oblivious to local economic facts?

Median county employment is $22,500 less than our state’s median.

County unemployment is 34 percent higher than state average.

Research identifies 54.6 percent of renters as “cost burdened.”

Landlords will pass this proposed PASD tax to renters.

Property owners’ 2019 valuations climbed 20-25 percent, possibly increasing future property taxes.

Scarcity increases costs.

PASD planners “honoring the previous work of community members and their recommendations over the past decade” knowingly bypass modular construction’s 35 percent cost savings for taxpayers.

A simple majority vote can pass this levy.
