LETTER: Not above law

Does the U.S. Constitution allow President Trump to do anything he wants?

Here are some comments made by President Trump that suggests he honestly believes he is above the law.

“When you’re a star, they (women) let you do it.”

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” referring to emails Hillary Clinton deleted from her server. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”

“Article II [of the Constitution] allows me to do anything I want.”

These comments would not be disturbing if they were spoken by a late night comedian who was ridiculing President Trump’s lack of knowledge of Article II of the Constitution, but to hear such comments from President Trump makes me realize that he is not only uninformed, but absolutely mistaken.

It is laughable to think President Trump actually believes he is above the law, but what is not humorous is the fact that the majority of the U.S. Senate is not willing to censor Trump’s irrationality.

Only one other president of the United States has made such an absurd statement when asked how he could believe that illegal presidential actions could be considered legal.

President Nixon said: “When the president does it, that means it is not illegal.”

If this were the case, then many of the actions done by President Trump would not be prosecutable.

Time will tell if this argument will stand up in a court of law.
