LETTER: Military action not the way to solve tensions in Syria

After seeing the shocking footage of the gassing in Syria, whose emotional trigger would not be pulled toward some sort of action in response?

You can see that emotion in the enthusiastic response to the attack by the media.

We so want a simple act to solve this complicated problem.

Yet a thoughtful leader will look for action with long-term impact to end the suffering.

We spent $70 million in Tomahawk missiles, and the airbase is already back in use supporting bombing runs on civilians.

Imagine how that $70 million could have been used to reduce human suffering.

If the concern is the killing of “beautiful babies,” as President Trump said, welcome them as refugees and provide humanitarian aid.

Experience has led both military and foreign policy experts to declare that there is no military solution for this complicated Sunni-Shia struggle enflamed by multiple foreign powers.

There must be the willingness to dive into the complicated and conflicting interests of the Russians, Syrians, Iranians, other Arab countries and the U.S. to create a diplomatic solution.

Let’s make sure our representatives know that they should not praise or support any further dangerous, impulsive and unsanctioned military actions by this president.
