LETTER: I’m pinning my hopes on Trump, not the divisions in our country

At election time, there is always a call to unify our country.

I believe that call is impossible to attain.

We are divided politically, religiously and morally, and have been for years.

The Judeo-Christian principle that has faithfully guided our country for over 200 years is all but gone.

It has been replaced with everyone doing what is right in their eyes.

The division began with the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Roe v. Wade and has continued ever since.

The divide is deep and wide, and I see no way to resolve it.

The only thing that could unify our country is a war where our very existence as a country would be threatened.

We now have a new president in office.

He is not responsible for the divide.

His presidency has once again shown us how deep that divide is.

Is he arrogant? Yes.

Is he thin-skinned? Yes.

Is he politically clumsy? Yes.

He is all of that, but boy, what a fresh breath of political air he is.

I did not vote for either candidate for president.

My conscience would not let me do so, but I will be praying for President Trump, and hopefully he will mature as our president as time goes by.

Go, Trump!

Keith Thompson,

Port Angeles
