LETTER: Honor ideas

Martin Luther King Jr. was a womanizing, philandering man.

Why do we have a holiday to honor him?

Because his ideas about how we should judge a person by their character rather than the color of their skin were right.

His ideas were right even though he was flawed.

He was human.

Should we tear down statues of him?

Should we change the names of buildings and streets named after him?

Of course not.

Neither should we be tearing down other parts of our history.

History is there for us to learn from.

To build upon.

Don’t like a historical figure from our country?

Tough.

It happened.

Get over it.

Put up a plaque explaining the person’s strengths and weaknesses beneath their statue if you must.

Only short sighted, shallow people cancel history.
