LETTER: Here’s hoping history won’t repeat itself with Trump’s presidency

Democracy at work with a new president.

Cheers by those emboldened by the change in power.

Jeers by those who feel desperation.

A quote from Oscar Wilde comes to mind: “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.”

We can only wait and see.

With what is happening today, you may wonder where this country is going.

Look back to history.

Since the beginning of the nation, we have gone through periods of populism, isolationism, nationalism.

History has a habit of repeating itself.

The most recent example of isolationism and its consequences came about in the 1920s after World War I.

It continued into the 1930s with the formation of the America First Committee, the political organization that included the likes of Charles Lindbergh, Walt Disney and others of prominence.

During this period of worldly nationalism, democracy was overrun by the birth of dictatorial governments.

They created chaos to the world order.

It took a world war to bring democracy back.

Today, we see the extent of the hysteria of isolationism/populism/nationalism.

The scapegoats of the ’20s were Jews.

Today it is Muslims.

While the office of the presidency deserves respect, my hope is for President Trump to earn that respect.

Respect the principles of the Constitution, the citizens of the nation, respect common sense and keep his ego in check.

If not, history will repeat itself.

Protect the Union, get educated and vote at the next elections, local, state and national.

Jay Sakas,
