LETTER: Dissent is what makes America great, not blind obedience

The September “Speaking Out” column [Sept. 24, PDN] posed the question of what it would take to “make America great again.”

One of the respondents, a retired principal, stated we should get behind the elected president.

He also suggested those of us who are unhappy with this president’s divisiveness should simply “get over it.”

That attitude says we should meekly accept and support those in power, no matter how poorly they represent us.

We do not live in an autocracy where the will of the elected president is absolute.

Trump’s supporters have forgotten that when he took the oath of office, it was to represent all Americans, not just those who voted for him or pledge loyalty to him.

This president has done nothing to attempt a healing of division.

He instead delights in dividing us into factions and then fans the flames.

The notion that we should simply “get over it” is the most un-patriotic, un-American notion one can espouse, in my opinion.

Why didn’t Republicans just “get over it” and support our previous president of the last eight years?

Dissent is good for America.

We were founded on it.

I served in the military to protect all Americans, whether their politics agreed with mine or not.

The president now needs to understand that he serves us, not the other way around.

I served in the classroom, educating students and stimulating thoughtful debate.

I taught students to think for themselves, as we all should.

This is what makes America great and will continue to do so.
