It seems now a large segment of our society is engaged in cleansing our history of all statues, monuments and references to the Civil War and slavery.
This is being done because they claim to be offended by them.
Cleansing of history has been an early act of every totalitarian regime.
The Romans did it, the Nazis did it, the Soviets did it and the Taliban have done it.
The Taliban blew up two ancient historical sculptures in an Afghan mountain because they found them offensive.
The behavior of the people who pulled down the Civil War statue in Durham, N.C., was not unlike the behavior of the Taliban who blew up the sculpture, celebrating and stomping on the remains.
Now we know that both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were slave owners, a fact that is offensive to many.
Logic would then suggest that we should blow up Mount Rushmore.
Have we really reached this level of irrational thought in this country?
The Civil War monuments should remain to remind us of what once happened in this country and what could happen again given the current political climate.
