LETTER: Carbon tax initiative would impose modest fee for investment

Value of I-1631

How much is clean air worth?

How much is a habitable planet worth?

We are faced with these questions now as we are asked to vote for an investment in the future of this state, initiative I-1631, a fee on carbon pollution.

The no campaign has been sending out slick and convincing ads that say it’s going to be too expensive for the poor people of this state and for small businesses.

Keep in mind that these ads are paid for by the Western States Petroleum Association.

Yep, oil companies that can spend millions to mislead us and fear losing profit.

In reality, I-1631 will impose a modest fee that will fund much-needed investments in renewable energy, public transportation, healthy forests and water and energy efficiency.

The initiative is written to help and protect marginalized populations.

Contrary to the claims of the no campaign, there is clear oversight and accountability to ensure that the revenue is effectively combating pollution.

It is written and powered by people who understand how invaluable our state is and our planet is.

Please vote yes on I-1631.

Dan Burdick,
