LETTER: Buchanan fans the flames of division in America

Patrick Buchanan is spreading fake news again.

See “Patriotism vs. anti-Americanism,” July 9.

While he correctly chastises the political left in this country for gross political correctness in trying to expunge famous American heroes and historical events, he is also incorrect in labeling the political left as anti-American.

He says, “Only 25 percent, 1 in 4 Democrats, professes to be proud of our political system, our democracy.”

I’ll bet he added the words “our democracy” to that sentence.

Take it from one moderate Democrat: I love our democracy and our military, our heroes and our traditions.

What I hate is how our system has been corrupted as reflected in the current state of politics in America.

I despise political corruption, gerrymandering, obstructionism, pathological lying, cronyism, misogyny, xenophobia (look it up), anti-science and religious fanaticism.

All the things that push our culture and society backward and cause us to mistrust each other and doubt the sanity and patriotism of others.

Buchanan’s piece is another, probably intentional, exaggeration and misrepresentation of liberal thinking solely intended to fan the hatred routinely espoused by the political right.

However, Buchanan’s distortions are still allowed by the Constitution, which we liberals really do love.
