LETTER: Bond a bargain

I do not have children in Quilcene schools but, as a Quilbilly that cares about my community, I feel a responsibility shared with my neighbors to provide our children with the best education possible.

To me that requires an environment that is safe, inspirational and relevant.

Experts have determined that the elementary school building is unsafe, facilities are inadequate for teaching with modern technical equipment and students interested in vocational careers must sacrifice countless hours being bussed to other schools forcing them to miss out on after-hours activities.

Quilcene students deserve better to prepare themselves for successful careers.

I applaud the Quilcene School Board’s efforts to address these shortcomings.

While some residents may find them too ambitious or ill-directed, there will be subsequent opportunity for community input to decisions on how to spend the requested funds.

Waiting will inevitably result in higher costs while continuing to saddle our children with a sub-par education.

The successful completion of the proposed projects will not only infuse new excitement into our schools and attract excellent teachers, but also improve enrichment opportunities for homeschooled students.

Our community will deservedly feel pride in deciding to support a more complete and useful education for our youth.

Bond proponents correctly note that the bond’s cost will not raise taxes while opponents calculate the typical annual cost at $348.

Less than one dollar a day to help our children prepare better for their future is a bargain I fully support.
