The city of Sequim hopes to rebuild Fir Street between Fifth and Sequim avenues.
I was a little kid born in 1930 and lived on the 6000 block of Fifth Avenue.
My parents had just finished building our home, a two-story house, that was white with a green roof.
Being interested in the project, I spent all the time I was allowed to spend to watch the paving.
The road was graded, then gravel was spread, then a truck with a tank full of hot oil was spread on the gravel.
Next, a grader worked the oil and gravel together.
Next came the steamroller, which was operated by Percy Goven, our neighbor.
The roller had a step behind the boiler where he kept a water bucket and a basket to get back, and sticks and the bucket to get water out of the irrigation ditch.
After he got all fired up, he would have to do this procedure all over again.
This was about 1937 or 1938.
