I read the letter this morning regarding the armed citizenry with a combination of humor and fury. (“Armed citizens can best combat mass shootings,” PDN, Aug. 28)
Does the letter writer actually think that some guy armed with a .38 is going to suddenly stop in his tracks and take down some psycho wielding a .45-caliber semi-automatic rifle like Audi Murphy?
In the aftermath of the slaughter in El Paso, some of these “brave citizens” admitted they were the first ones to run when the shooting started.
That is one of the trademarks of sanity.
Arming everyone does not work and it never will.
If you have some deranged, 200-pound teenager armed with an AR-15 saunter into a classroom filled with kids and a 5-foot-3, 110-pound teacher with a .22 pop gun in her desk drawer, who does he think will be the first one to catch one between the eyes?
As I said before, arming everyone only works in a perfect world.
And the world we live in is far from perfect. I’d really like to know what the letter writer would do if he suddenly heard gunshots going off in a crowded department store.
Would he bravely take out his piece and face down the killer, or would he exit the store quickly like the other sane people?
