LETTER: America and its president lost its heart

In Dickens’ timeless classic, “A Christmas Carol,” the smallest, very sickly member of the Cratchit family, Tiny Tim, proclaims “God bless us every one!” to all gathered at the family’s welcoming Christmas table.

In the modern American version, live and on display for the world to behold, an innocent child cruelly separated from her parents dies on Christmas eve.

And the American non-fictional Scrooge sends out his own proclamation to the nation and the world, “Merry Christmas to all, even the haters and losers!”

The “losers” I guess are like this poor child and her family.

“Losers” like the rest of us hardworking Americans, who weren’t born into extreme wealth and privilege.

“Losers” like Sen. John McCain, true patriot and real American.

Another “loser,” according to America’s soulless Scrooge, the Scrooge with no character or conscience.

The man who is, unimaginably, now president of our formerly great nation, Donald J. Trump.

Our nation, now represented by this and other appallingly senseless behavior.

An American first lady, heretofore a dignified role as an emissary of goodwill, values, decency, now embodied in an unforgettable, public gesture of visiting incarcerated children heartlessly separated from their only worldly comfort, their loving parents.

A first lady showing how much she cared by wearing a cheap overgarment emblazoned with her personalized message, “I really don’t care, do u?”

Our nation was built on a great foundation of higher principles and ideals. But we have lost our heart.

And a people who lose their heart, their humanity, lose what makes us human.
