LETTER: Always keep safety in mind when riding a bicycle

It’s alarming to me, seeing men and women riding motorcycles, scooters or mopeds wearing shorts, dresses, flip-flops, sandals or tennis shoes.

Last week in Sequim, a lady was riding a scooter wearing a short dress with sandals.

Just protecting your head is not enough.

Sliding down the road at 20 mph or faster — with no protective clothing or footwear — is never good.

You come up to a red light and put your foot out.

If there is a little sand, water or oil on the road and your foot slips, your feet, toes or legs are probably in trouble.

Most accidents are within 5 miles of home, according to a Progressive Insurance survey in 2001.

Someone hitting you from behind, opening of a door, distracted driving, someone not seeing you, oil, water, loose gravel, rocks, — even rain-slicked lines and arrows on the road can be slippery and cause serious injuries.

Maybe you get lucky and none of this happens to you.

But if you really believe this, think about selling whatever you are riding.

Using a cane or wheelchair the rest of your life is not fun.

Be safe and keep the shiny side up.
