LETTER: A common enemy

Fractured and divided as a country.

This was America in 1941.

Despite what was being reported about Nazi Germany and Imperialist Japan, there was opposition to becoming involved in or even preparing for war.

After Pearl Harbor brought the war to our doorstep, Americans did what people around the world did.

They mobilized to defeat a common enemy.

Today we are again fractured and divided as a country.

We have again been attacked.

This time by a virus, COVID-19.

This attacker has killed one in every 500 Americans.

Yet we have failed to unite against this common enemy.

Great sacrifices were made to defeat the common enemy in WWII.

A mask is a small sacrifice.

Eating outdoors or at home is a small sacrifice.

Have we become so weak as a people that we can no longer defeat a common enemy?

This time, the enemy is COVID-19.
