PORT TOWNSEND — A self-playing ukele, a father’s final words and a resurfaced shipmate. These fictitious accounts illustrate at least one truth: the tradition of storytelling is alive and well in Jefferson County.
Quimper Story Guild welcomes tellers and listeners to its monthly story swap from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Port Townsend Public Library Learning Center, 1256 Lawrence St.
Each teller owns the floor for 5 minutes. In that time, they may craft a plot, characters, voices, gestures and elements such as music and props — whatever it takes to captivate the audience.
Attendees can pitch in to “feed” the story or “feed” the teller, perhaps highlighting the moments or characters that stood out to them.
Attendees sign up to tell when they arrive; availability is on a first-come basis. One 15-minute slot is available for someone who has prepared a longer telling.
Launched in March 2017, the Quimper Story Guild aims to foster an appreciation for the art and tradition of storytelling in the Jefferson County communities.
The group meets on the third Sunday of every month.
