Poetry readings to feature Pulitzer Prize winners

PORT TOWNSEND — Poetry on the Salish Sea will present its second Summer Sunday Readings from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The free annual poetry series will be at Wilderbee Farm and Meadery, 223 Cook Ave. Extension.

In 2023, the inaugural series of six readings featured 18 poets who shared their work with more than 500 attendees.

This month’s readers include Pulitzer Prize-winners poets Rae Armantrout and Kay Ryan along with MacArthur Genius Award recipient Heather McHugh.

Armantrout is the author of “Finalists,” 2018 National Book award finalist “Wobble” and “Versed,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2010.

Armantrout is the current judge of the Yale Younger Poets Prize and is set to release a new book, “Go Figure,” in September.

Ryan is the author of several books of poetry, including “Flamingo Watching,” “The Niagara River” and “Say Uncle.”

Her 2010 book, “The Best of It: New and Selected Poems” won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Ryan was appointed as U.S. Poet Laureate in 2008 and held the position for two terms.

McHugh wrote “Dangers,” “To the Quick,” “Muddy Matterhorn” and “Upgraded to Serious.” She taught at American colleges and universities for 40 years, including a stint at the University of Washington.

The readings are conducted outdoors. Attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly and bring chairs or blankets for seating.

Small batch, handcrafted mead and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Another reading, on Aug. 25, will feature Erin Malone, Luther Hughes and Ruby Hansen Murray.

The series will finish Sept. 29 with readings by Rick Barot, Melissa Kwasny and Jacqueline Allen Trimble.
