Poet laureate to read from ‘Bugle,’ lead hike this weekend

Washington state’s poet laureate will read his poetry in Forks and lead a hike and writing session along Marymere Falls Trail this weekend.

Tod Marshall, the 2016-18 Washington State Poet Laureate, will read from his most recent collection, “Bugle,” at 6 p.m. today at the Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave. A brief question-and-answer session will follow the reading.

On Saturday, Marshall will lead a guided writing session and hike along the Marymere Falls trail. The hike will leave from the Storm King Ranger Station on Lake Crescent at 11 a.m.

The short meditative hike will offer opportunities for participants to share their writing. No previous hiking or writing experience is required to attend the hike, but participants must be at least 18 years old.

Space is limited, and preregistration is required. To register, visit www.nols.org/events/port-angeles.html.

Marshall is a poet and professor at Gonzaga University. In addition to “Bugle,” which won the Washington State Book Award in 2015, he is also the author of “Dare Say,” “The Tangled Line” and a collection of interviews with contemporary poets, “Range of the Possible.”

The state-appointed poet laureate serves a two-year term and is sponsored by Humanities Washington and ArtsWA, with the support of Gov. Jay Inslee. The position is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities Washington.

His visit is funded by the North Olympic Library System and by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.
