Playwrights to be honored by Port Townsend Arts Commission

PORT TOWNSEND — A ceremony to honor the winning playwrights of the 2017 One-Act Play Competition is planned tonight at Key City Playhouse.

This event at the playhouse at 419 Washington St., is free and open to the public.

Light refreshments will be served in the Playhouse lobby at an informal reception for the playwrights at 5:30 p.m.; the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.

The ceremony— hosted by the Port Townsend Arts Commission Chair Owen Rowe and fellow Commissioner Lisa Wentworth — will honor Christopher Clow, Judith Glass Collins, Angela Gyurko, Mark Rose, Deborah Weise and D.D. Wigley.

Port Townsend Mayor Deborah Stinson will present the awards.

The arts commission will present the awards to the six writers, all of whose works will be performed at PT PlayFest 22 produced by Key City Public Theatre.

Short excerpts from selected plays will be performed at the ceremony, providing a sneak preview of the festival, which opens March 2.

PT Playfest 22, which will run through March 11 at Key City Playhouse and the nearby Pope Marine Building, will include the works by the six winning playwrights, a TeenLab play by recent Port Townsend High School graduate Ian Coates, and staged readings of full-length plays in development by Richard Dresser and featured guest playwright Jeni Mahoney.

The Port Townsend Arts Commission’s annual play-writing workshop, led by Mahoney, and other interactive festival events will be free and open to the public during the festival.

The Port Townsend Arts Commission promotes and encourages public programs to further the development and public awareness of and interest in the arts, and to act in an advisory capacity to the city government in connection with the artistic and cultural development of our city.

Key City Public Theatre has garnered numerous awards and honors for artistic merit. It plays an important role in the fabric of Jefferson County by consistently producing thought-provoking and visually stunning productions, performed to growing regional audiences.
