Czech trio to perform on Saturday at Wheeler Theater

PORT TOWNSEND — The Czech chamber ensemble Smetana Trio will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden.

Tickets are $36 to $40 for the concert, which is part of Centrum’s Port Townsend Chamber Music Series, which began in October and ends in June. Tickets for individual concerts and for the series, which began in October and ends in June, can be purchased at tinyurl.com/PDN-chambermusic.

The program will be Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor, Martinu’s Bergerettes and Dvořák’s Dumkas op.90.

The Smetana Trio was founded in 1934 by Czech pianist Josef Pálenícek, violinist Alexandr Plocek and cellist František Smetana, Centrum said on its website.

It now is composed of Jitka Cechová on the piano, Radim Kresta on the violin and Jan Pálenícek on the cello,

In spring 2017, the Smetana Trio won BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Award for its recording of the complete trios by Bohuslav Martinů.

The recording also received recognition as BBC Music Magazine’s June 2016 Recording of the Month, Sunday Times’ Recording of the Week, and the Diapason d’Or award.

The trio has been presented at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., The Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Duke Performances Chamber Arts Series, the Chicago Chamber Music Society and the Da Camera Society in Los Angeles.

The group’s recordings include an album featuring the complete piano trios of Shostakovich and Ravel, and an all-Dvořák disc which received BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Award for 2007 and the French Diapason d’Or. Additional discs include works by Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Schubert.
