Clallam Bay-Sekiu Fun Days offers weekend of play, fireworks

SEKIU — Opportunities to eat, race, play and parade will be plentiful in Clallam Bay today through Sunday during the 36th annual Clallam Bay-Sekiu Fun Days.

Admission is free to most events.

New this year, live music will resound through Clallam Bay County Park, 16716 Frontier St., from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The festival draws both tourists and locals to Clallam Bay, frequently serving as a reunion hub for long-distance family and friends, Fun Days Chair Tricia Hutson said.

However, organizers are hopeful the all-day music series will attract more visitors this year than ever before, Hutson said.

Always a favorite, the grand parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, marching, rolling and dancing its way from Weel Road to Bogachiel Street.

Prizes for the grand parade participants include $100 cash, a ribbon and a free quarter-page advertisement in the Seniors Sunset Times for the winning business; $50 cash and a ribbon for the winning community member; and $50 cash and a ribbon for the winning child.

Hutson also promises grand eats, including gyros, classic hot dogs and hamburgers, chili dogs and strawberry raspberry shortcake available from various food vendors all weekend. If you plan to attend today’s potluck social at 6 p.m., you may wish to bring hot entree items, salads, desserts and the like, she said.

A bike race and fun run provide opportunities to work off some of those calories. The Poker Ride Race will occur at 9 a.m. Saturday at Clallam Bay High School, and the 3.7-mile fun run sets off at 10 a.m. Sunday.

A bit of history and art also will occupy several time slots throughout the festival.

Photographs depicting the fishing and logging industries in the 1800s and other historic moments in Sekiu and Clallam Bay will be available for purchase today and Saturday at Clallam Bay School at 16933 state Highway 112.

Amateur photographers may enter to compete in a photo contest — viewings are available all day today and Saturday at the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Chamber of Commerce, 16753 state Highway 112. To enter, contact info@clallambaysekiu fundays.com. Judges will announce the awards Sunday.

At 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, the Messy Palettes Art Show will transform the Sekiu Community Center into a nearly unrecognizable gallery — filled with all kinds of work, from paintings to macrame to hand-stitched pillows, Hutson said.

Artists can enter their work Friday between 10 a.m. and noon at Sekiu Community Center, 42 Rice St.

Entrants, while not limited by age, must either live in the Cape Flattery School District or be a member of the Messy Palettes Art League. Each artist may enter a total of five pieces. Winners, who will be determined by popular vote, will receive ribbons and awards.

Among those featuring work at the festival will be local artist Paul Blake, who will demonstrate the art of Japanese fish printing at his vendor’s tent Saturday. Blake, who has lived in Sekiu since retiring from teaching in the Port Angeles School District, makes prints from fish using the Japanese technique called “gyotaku.”

On Saturday at dusk, fireworks launched from the Mason’s Olson Resort breakwater, 444 Front St. in Sekiu, will illuminate Clallam Bay.
