PORT TOWNSEND — Michelle Huang will present “Classical Connections” at the Candlelight Concerts series at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The series, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St. in Port Townsend, also will be simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9 and stream at www. trinityumcpt.org.
A native of Taiwan, Huang is a Seattle-based concert pianist who has collaborated with musicians from the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Philharmonic and Seattle Pro Musica.
The concert is free, although a donation of $15 per person is requested.
Half the proceeds will benefit Jefferson County Immigrants’ Rights Advocates to “support the rights of immigrants and their families, giving priority to those who live or work on the Olympic Peninsula and immigrant detainees within Washington State, through access to legal services, standing witness, family support, community education and advocacy.”
Huang’s program will highlight how living composers often are influenced by masters from the past.
During the concert, Huang, will present three sets of composers: Impressionist composer Claude Debussy and contemporary Australian composer Natalie Williams; Romantic composer Johannes Brahms and American composer Missy Mazzoli; and Ragtime composers William Bolcom and Carter Pann.
Each set of pieces is connected through rhythms, harmonies, styles and musical languages, and the audience will be able to hear the newly composed pieces through the lens of the old masters.
