‘Asian Flair’ art debuts at Civic Center; ‘Keying Around’ pianos coming in July

SEQUIM — The City Arts Advisory Commission will sponsor the opening of An Asian Flair art exhibit and artist reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

The show is at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The arts panel reviewed 32 pieces of work from 16 artists before selecting 21 pieces to be included in the show.

The exhibit includes works in acrylic on canvas, watercolor on rice paper, collage, Asian brush, Suminagashi, woodcut, pen/ink, porcelain and photography.

The artists represented are Ryoko Toyama, Danielle Tanner, Roxanne Grinstad, Patty Lampley, Monica Gutieriez-Quarto, Melanie Salazar, Kaitlyn Walter, Linda Chapman, Pete Tjemsland, Erica McClain and Valerie Henschel. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 30.

The opening event will include demonstrations from three local presenters:

• 5 p.m. — Janie Redifer will present ideas of how to bring the art of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, into the home. Redifer lived in Japan for six years and studied for two years at the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Tokyo. She earned the Sogetsu Teacher’s Diploma Fourth Grade, which allows her to teach Ikebana.

• 5:45 p.m. — Grinstad, M.A. Ed., will demonstrate the art of Japanese brush-style painting. Grinstad was awarded the Certificate of Merit in Asian Brush teaching and painting after completing the Ning Yehs Teaching Techniques course at Coastline College in California.

• 6:30 p.m. — Emily Hu is the owner of Roji Home and Garden. She will present simple and elegant ways to add “Asian Flair” to a home or garden.

‘Keying Around’

Today also is the kick-off of the summer music program “Keying Around.” Four donated pianos have been painted by local artists and will be placed in various locations in downtown Sequim throughout July.

Professional musicians will be scheduled throughout the month, but the pianos are available for anyone to play. The pianos will be auctioned at a special event Friday, Aug. 4, to raise money for the continuation of the program.

For more information, contact City Clerk Karen Kuznek-Reese at 360-681-3428 or kkuznek@sequim wa.gov.
