PORT ANGELES — Justin T. Cox, 37, the man accused of shooting at law enforcement during a standoff in Carlsborg last month is undergoing a competency evaluation at Western State Hospital.
Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michele Devlin at a hearing Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court said her office expected the results that afternoon.
Devlin and public defender Alex Stalker, who is representing Cox, agreed to a Monday, 9 a.m. hearing set by Judge Elizabeth Stanley.
On June 17, Cox allegedly barricaded himself in a residence and used an AK-47-type rifle to fire several rounds at a Peninsula Crisis Response Team, striking two nearby houses and two armored vehicles at the scene.
He faces 14 counts: six counts of first-degree assault against law enforcement and second-degree assault against law enforcement; death threats/harassment; first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm; two counts of reckless endangerment; first degree malicious mischief; resisting arrest; and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
He was booked into Clallam County Jail and bail was set at $1 million.
Cox has refused to leave his cell to attend an initial court appearance on June 18 and a motion hearing on June 20.
According to the arrest report, Cox said his name was “Jesus” and that Yahweh spoke through him.
