Chimacum man sentenced to 9 months after guilty plea

Probation, evaluation and treatment additional

Arnor Steven Aurdal, 66, of Chimacum has been sentenced to 9 months in prison followed by 12 months of probation after pleading guilty to one count of Assault in the Second Degree – Deadly Weapon and one count of Reckless Endangerment.

Aurdal had been arrested and taken into custody on May 10, after threatening a neighbor, brandishing a firearm and discharging two rounds into the ground.

Private security camera footage showed Aurdal arguing with the victim, going to his vehicle to retrieve a firearm, and waving and pointing the weapon at the victim. At that point, Aurdals wife tried to intervene, he then discharged one round near her feet.

Then he discharged another round near the victim’s feet before the victim punched him in the face. The victim was able to gain control of the firearm and call 911 while Aurdal stumbled to the ground

According to the victim, Aurdal then left the scene with his wife, saying that he would return with a shotgun.

A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office statement on May 11 said that responding deputies conducted a high-risk stop of Aurdal’s vehicle, which was leaving the area. Aurdal was found in the passenger seat. Refusing to comply with the deputies’ commands, Aurdal apparently expressed a desire for the deputies to use lethal force on him. After multiple stun gun deployments, Aurdal was taken into custody.

A press-release from Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office read: “On June 28, 2024, Mr. Aurdal entered guilty pleas to one count of Assault in the Second Degree – Deadly Weapon and one count of Reckless Endangerment. Based on his criminal history Mr. Aurdal had a sentencing range of 6-9 months of confinement.”

Last Friday, Judge Brandon Mack, Superior Court Judge of Jefferson County, sentenced him to 9 months, with 12 additional months of probation and the additional requirement that he complete a substance use disorder evaluation, and follow treatment recommendations.

“Everybody agrees — Beckett Point, Jefferson County, the State of Washington — we can’t have people firing guns no matter how severe the conflict is. You crossed the line,” Mack said to Aurdal at sentencing.
