ON THE WATERFRONT: White Coral takes on logs in Port Angeles Harbor

AT THE BEGINNING of the week, the Panamanian flagged cargo ship White Coral moored to the Port of Port Angeles’ Terminal 3.

When she departs for China on Sunday, the 576-foot vessel will be loaded with approximately 5.3 million board feet of debarked logs that were harvested from private land in Western Washington.

I was speaking with a fellow recently who told me he used to sit in his office on U.S. Highway 101 and watch as boats built by Armstrong Marine were towed to and from the waterfront, all the while holding covetous thoughts.

Recently he went onto Craigslist in search of a fishing boat and found a 26-foot monohull aluminum boat with a center console on Lake Michigan that was built by Armstrong Marine in Port Angeles at their facility on Highway 101 midway between Sequim and Port Angeles.

I spoke with Capt. Charlie Crane who works in the sales department at Armstrong and he said they built the boat as a demo for their Port Angeles facility and then shipped it to their Swansboro, N.C., plant for use as a demo there.

They then sold the boat to a gent in Chicago who put it on Craigslist and the boat is now back in Clallam County.

Platypus Marine, the full-service shipyard, yacht repair facility and steel-boat manufacturer on Marine Drive in Port Angeles has Shaken Not Stirred in the Commander building. She is a 72-foot Admiral Marine that was formerly know as Plum Duff.

I understand personnel will install new transducers, shaft cutters and, prior to going back into the water, the vessel will receive a fresh coat of bottom paint.

Platypus also hauled out a 45-foot fiberglass catamaran that came up from Scappoose, Ore., and she too is stowed in the Commander building where personnel are repairing some hull damage on the port side and installing new rub rails.

As Good As It Gets is sitting on the hard. She is a 93-foot Broward that is having her holding tank system serviced.

The mechanical department is also servicing the engine in anticipation of the new owner doing some cruising prior to mooring the vessel in Lake Union for the winter.

On Monday, Tesoro Petroleum bunkered Twinkle Island, a 751-foot bulk carrier that is flagged in the Marshall Islands.

On Tuesday, Tesoro refueled Bulk Portugal which was also a 751-foot bulk carrier but is flagged in Panama.

On Friday, Tesoro wrapped up the week refueling bulk carriers by providing bunkers to Yunnan, a 590-foot bulk carrier that is flagged in Hong Kong.

Today, Tesoro is scheduled to refuel Trident Star, a 623-foot bulk cargo ship that is flagged in Hong Kong.
