Youth rowing camp starts Monday in Port Angeles

Youth rowing camps start Monday

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association summer rowing camps for youth entering grades six through 12 will begin Monday.

Four sessions are offered, all run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the OPRA rowhouse on Ediz Hook.

The camps are geared both to novices looking to learn how to row and experienced competitive rowers trying to hone their skills and gain an edge.

Rowers will work in sweep, sculling and land training and coaches will teach everything rowers need to know on and off the water. Racing will cap the week.

The association offers both recreational and competitive rowing options.

Each session is $120, and rowers can attend more than one session.

Yanks’ Pineda out

BOSTON (AP) — New York starting pitcher Michael Pineda is mulling over what could be season-ending surgery after being diagnosed with a partial ligament tear in his pitching elbow.

Pineda, a former Mariner, was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday for the ulnar collateral ligament injury and Cashman said it was the recommendation of the team for him to undergo Tommy John surgery.

But Pineda’s intent is to get a second opinion before deciding whether to undergo surgery.

Manager Joe Girardi said Pineda has experienced elbow soreness after pitching before, but that this time was different.

“It was never something he was used to, but when it was sore the second day is when he became concerned,” Girardi said. “It was devastating for him. He understands what it’s like to work back from a serious injury. Now he’s gotta do it again.”

Sox DFA Sandoval

BOSTON (AP) — Panda-mania is over in Boston before it ever really began.

The Red Sox designated third baseman Pablo Sandoval for assignment on Friday, cutting their losses on the $95 million free agent who was never productive or healthy enough to replicate the success he had in San Francisco.

The Red Sox have seven days to trade or release the 30-year-old Sandoval, who was activated from the disabled list (inner ear infection) and returned from an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. Unless they can find a taker for part of his salary, they will have paid $95 million for a total of 161 games, 575 at-bats, 136 hits and 14 homers — and not a single one of them in the postseason.

“It really came down to us feeling we were not a better club if he was on our club at the major league level,” Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said.

Sandoval played in 32 games this season and managed just 21 hits. The Red Sox have mostly been using Deven Marrero at third base.

Babe Parilli dies

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Babe Parilli, the former Patriots quarterback who starred in the team’s American Football League days, died Saturday. He was 87.

The cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Parilli played for the then-Boston Patriots from 1961 to 1967. He was voted to three AFL All-Star games and was the AFL’s Comeback Player of the Year in 1966.

Parilli’s 31 touchdown passes in 1964 were a team record until 2007. Parilli is fourth on the Patriots’ career passing list with 16,747 yards and is in the team’s Hall of Fame.

He was the backup to Joe Namath when the Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969.

Froome leads

RODEZ, France (AP) — There is only one thing certain at the Tour de France: Nothing is certain.

Following two frenetic days of racing in the Pyrenees, no one would have bet a cent on a change of leadership on Saturday after Stage 14, a rolling 113-mile ride with no major difficulty.

But a short and steep climb to the finish in the southern town of Rodez was enough for Chris Froome and his mighty Sky team to recover the yellow jersey they lost two days before in the mountains.

The day’s big loser was Fabio Aru, the Astana leader, who cracked in the last 500 meters and relinquished the coveted tunic to the three-time champion.

Froome said he had no explanation for Aru’s breakdown. But Astana team director Dmitryi Fofonov said the Italian climber simply paid for his efforts in the previous days.

“He was on his own, isolated,” Fofonov said.
