TRACK: PA girls take first at Lil Norway

POULSBO — The Port Angeles girls blew away the competition, winning four events and beating out 18 other schools to take the team title at the Lil’ Norway Track and Field Meet.

Port Angeles’ Gracie Long won two events, the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, while teammate Emma Albright, a freshman, won the 200-meter run and came in second in both the 100-meter run and the long jump.

Long had an interesting duel with Sequim distance runner Morgan Bingham, who finished second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Long beat Bingham by five seconds in the 1,600 and by 20 seconds in the 3,200. Bingham’s sibling, Murray, won the boys’ 3,200-meter race.

Long now has 16 first-place finishes in the 2017 season as both an individual and relay team member.

The Roughrider girls ended with 125.5 points to host North Kitsap’s 117. Sequim did the best of the local schools in the boys’ events, coming in third place behind North Kitsap and Bainbridge. The Sequim girls also came in fifth.

Forks’ Cole Baysinger had a discus throw of 137 feet, 10 inches, winning the event by a huge margin. His throw was more than 15 feet beyond the second-place throw. He also came in second in the shot put.

Sequim’s Riley Martin won the 300-meter hurdles and came in second in the 110-meter hurdles. Port Angeles’ Devin Edwards won the shot put for the sixth time this season.

In the rarely held hammer throw, Port Angeles’ Hayden Wickham won the event with a throw of 109 feet even. That is the second-longest hammer throw in the state in the 2A division this year.
