SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles, Sequim both win in boys’ tennis

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles tennis team beat Olympic 6-1 to remain in third place in the Olympic League.

“The guys played some good, steady tennis. It was a better team score than our first meeting but there is still substantial room for improvement if we are to get very deep into the postseason,” said coach Gil Stockton.

“There is need to focus more acutely on footwork and giving too many easy volleys and overheads to the opposition but the guys are improving each week. Kenny Soule found his stroke again and breezed through his No. 1 singles match. He hit the ball with greater confidence than in past matches,” Stockton said.

Singles player Hayden Woods extended his No. 2 winning streak to 10. No. 3 singles player Jaden Seibel also won. Stockton gave team balls to the doubles team of Hunter Dougherty and Bo Bradow for an epic match. They lost the first set 3-6, but came back to win the second 7-6 in a tiebreaker and then the match by winning their third set 6-2.

“These guys will just not give up,” Stockton said.

The doubles teams of Lucas Jarnigan/Milo Whitman and Wyatt Hall/Tanner Price also won.

Port Angeles (6-3, 7-3) next plays at Sequim at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Wolves are a half-game behind the Roughriders for third place in the Olympic League.

Quilcene 3, Port Townsend 0

QUILCENE — The Quilcene volleyball girls remained undefeated with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-10) nonleague win over Port Townsend.

The Rangers were led Monday night by Emily Hitt with 12 kills and four aces and 10 for 11 serving. Katie Love had 10 kills, five digs and three aces while serving 24 for 26. Abbygael Weller had five kills and seven digs, while Allanah Carron had 14 assists and seven digs. Sydney Brown also served 13 for 13 with three aces.

“Hitt, Love and Weller continue to dominate at the net, with attention now shifting to strengthen up the right side hitters and bring up their kills per game,” said coach Joni Crowell.

“Freshman Gina Brown saw some play time this game and hit several sets solidly, though neither brought down kills. Excellent serve receive, centered by … Weller, kept us in system throughout the majority of the game,” Crowell said.

Quilcene (6-0, 9-0) played at Puget Sound Adventist Tuesday after press deadline in a Sea-Tac 1B league match. The Rangers next host Christian Faith at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Port Townsend (0-2, 1-5) hosts Klahowya at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in an Olympic League 1A Division match.

The Lady Rangers are on the road 10.3.2017 against the tough league game Puget Sound Adventist, which is currently in a three way tie for first place (along with Rainier Christian and Mt. Rainier Lutheran)

Color run/walk

The Port Angeles Elementary Physical Educations Department is hosting a walk/run event based on color runs at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at Lincoln Park in Port Angeles.

The event is open to everyone. The cost is $10 per person with shirt purchase and $5 per person without shirt purchase.

Along the course, participants will be sprayed with non-toxic colored powder. “Students and their families have lots of fun being sprayed with paint as they run/walk the course,” said Port Angeles P.E. teacher Krista Winn.

“Though the powder is aimed at chest level, it is recommended that participants wear sunglasses or goggles to prevent the powder from getting in the eyes,” Wiin said. “It is also a good idea to put towels in the car so that the powder does not get on the seats during the ride home.”

Proceeds from this event will go toward purchasing much-needed physical education equipment at Port Angeles elementary school.

Each pre-registered participant registered by Oct. 18 will receive a personal powder packet. White tee shirts are available this year for an additional $5, but must be ordered by October 7. Shirt size needs to be indicated on the registration form. Sizes available are Youth S, M, L and Adult S, M, L, XL and 2XL.

Registration forms are available at all Port Angeles School District elementary schools, and should be returned with payment to the schools. A parent’s signature is needed on the registration form for children under 18. Checks should be made out to Port Angeles Marathon Association (PAMA).
