PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sequim pushes No. 1-ranked North Kitsap to the limit

SEQUIM — In their last regular-season meeting with North Kitsap, the Wolves got down big early, but then gave the unbeaten Vikings, ranked No. 1 among Class 2A schools in a recent coaches’ poll, everything they could handle, narrowly losing 3-2 (25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 15-13).

North Kitsap has not only not lost a match all year, the Vikings in fact have only lost a total of five sets all year. Three out of those five sets were won by the Sequim Wolves, whose only two losses all season have been to the Vikings.

In the end, just two points Thursday separated the two powerful squads.

“In the fifth game, we cored the first four points, then allowed [the Vikings] to score nine points a row to get the lead. We battled back to within one point at 10-9, but just couldn’t get the lead,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.

“Our team played very well as a whole,” she said.

Kalli Wiker had a season-best 33 assists and added 28 digs, while serving 21 for 21.

Tayler Breckenridge had 13 kills, 17 perfect passes, three blocks and 30 digs, while serving 12 for 13.

Jayla Julmist added 11 kills and four blocks, while Latisha Robideau had nine kills, six assists and 21 digs.

Isabelle Dennis served 14 for 14 with 21 digs, while Bobbi Sparks served 17 for 19 with 19 digs. Arlene Law added five kills.

The win virtually assures North Kitsap an Olympic League 2A Division title unless the Vikings are upset in a couple of their final matches. The Wolves are in good position to finish second, though they will have to play third-place Kingston a week from today to solidify second place.

First, Sequim (8-2, 10-2) will play at North Mason (5-4, 7-4) on Thursday.
