Sequim ends Port Angeles’ unbeaten start to season

PORT ANGELES — Sequim put a pin in Port Angeles’ unbeaten start to the Olympic League 2A Division volleyball season with a road sweep against the rival Roughriders 25-17, 25-17, 25-20.

The Wolves received strong performances from Ella Christiansen and Tayler Breckenridge in the win.

“Ella had a personal-best in kills with 14,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

“She led the offense by far. “If we can get other people hitting as well as she is, that will make a difference.”

Breckrenride was essential in the Wolves’ serve-receive game.

“We figured out we needed to have her in our serve-receive, so she had something like eight perfect passes which get the ball easier to our hitters for scoring opportunities,” Webber Heilman said.

Adrienne Haggerty added seven kills for the Wolves (3-1, 4-1) and Sydney Balkan added 12 assists and six digs.

“We never give up, they never act defeated which is a really good sign,” Webber Heilman said.

“PA was ahead of us in the third game and we just kept playing. They [the Riders] came back from being down 2-0 to Kingston, so we didn’t want to be in that situation.”

Port Angeles (3-1, 4-1) coach Christine Halberg said the loss showed areas where her team needs to improve.

“Overall, we played well,” Halberg said. “We just didn’t have the consistency.

“Sequim hit the ball well and mixed it up which put us guessing.

“It definitely showed us where we need to spend more time.”

Kiana Robideau lead the Riders with seven kills and eight digs. Callie Hall added 10 assists and five digs.

Aeverie Politika totaled five kills and four assists for Port Angeles.

The Wolves visit Kingston (1-3, 2-5) today, while the Riders travel to North Mason (0-4, 0-5).

Girls Swimming Bainbridge 105, Port Angeles 81

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders girls swim team won four events and qualified three new individual state times and four district times, but came up short on the road against a bigger, deeper Bainbridge team, losing 105-81.

Port Angeles took a lead over Bainbridge in Tuesday’s meet after wins in the 200 medley relay and a one-two finish in the 200 individual medley. But, according to coach Rich Butler, Bainbridge’s depth proved to be too much as the Spartans slowly built up a lead in the final eight events.

Winning two events was Jaine Macias in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 17.39 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.34). Macias’ 200 IM time was also good enough to qualify for state. Kenzie Johnson won the 100 backstroke (1:02.17), while the 200 medley relay team of Johnson, Macias, Felicia Che and Nadia Cole finished first (1:57.46).

Cole qualified for state and finished third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.40, while Johnson also qualified for state, finishing fifth in the 200 IM (2:22.87).

Qualifying for district were Sierra Hunter in 200 freestyle (fourth place, 2:12.90); Ashlee Seelye in the 50 freestyle (exhibition, 28.25), Taylor Beebe in the 100 freestyle (second place, 58.73) and Seelye in the 100 freestyle (fourth place, 1:01.03).

The Roughriders’ (3-0, 4-1) next meet is at 3 p.m. today at home against Port Townsend.
