PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sequim softball rolls North Mason; Chimacum’s Dotson strikes out 10 in complete-game win

SEQUIM — Big innings propelled Sequim to a 14-3 Olympic League 2A Division softball win in five innings over North Mason on Wednesday.

Jayla Julmist notched an RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1 all after one inning for the Wolves.

Sequim followed up by stringing six hits together for a seven-run second inning to take the lead.

Up 8-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Wolves iced the game with a six-run inning.

“[We] struck again in the forth for six more runs on hits by Isabelle Dennis, Brianna Dominguez, Shelby Jones, Latisha Robideau, Jessie Dominguez and Greta Christiansen,” Sequim coach Tim Lusk said.

Shelby Jones took the win on the mound, allowing only three hits, while striking out five and walking one.

Lusk said Dennis and Jessie Dominguez led the Wolves at the plate and Brianna Dominguez, Shelby Jones, Latisha Robideau, and Greta Christiansen each had two hits.

Second-place Sequim (4-2, 4-7) visits North Kitsap (3-2, 6-3) today.

Port Angeles 13, Bremerton 0, 5 innings

PORT ANGELES — Hope O’Connor and Ella Holland combined on a one-hit shutout for the Roughriders, striking out six total batters and walking none as Port Angeles cruised to its 41st straight Olympic League 2A Division victory.

“Hope O’Connor pitched a gem and [we] pounded the ball around the park for 17 hits,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said.

O’Connor helped her own cause with a hit and three RBIs in the win.

Natalie Steinman went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs and Brennan Gray went 2 for 3 with a double and scored.

Leadoff hitter Sierra Robinson went 2 for 2 with two stolen bases and scored twice.

Port Angeles (6-0, 9-1) visits Olympic (3-1, 5-2) today.

CHIMACUM — Cole Dotson struck out 10 in a complete-game shutout of the Eagles as Chimacum remained in first place in the Olympic League 1A Division.

Cody Clark went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk two runs and three RBIs to pace the Cowboys hitters.

Matthew Bainbridge had a two-run double, stole a base and scored as Chimacum (4-0, 6-5) remained unbeaten in 1A Division play.

The Cowboys step away from league play for a contest at 2A North Mason today.

SEQUIM — The Wolves had their chances, stranding 11 total base runners, but gave up two five-run innings in an Olympic League 2A Division loss to the Bulldogs.

Sequim starter Ian Miller was tagged for five runs on five hits and three walks in four innings pitched to take the loss. Miller struck out seven.

Up 5-2 entering the fifth inning, Wolves’ pitcher Cameron Welcher couldn’t get it going in relief, allowing four hits and two walks without recording an out as North Mason put up five more runs.

Welcher did have the Wolves’ best hit of the day, a two-RBI double.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders won a three-team match by a wide margin at Peninsula Golf Club on Wednesday.

“The guys came together and shot their best team score of the year on a very long, soggy Peninsula course,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.

“They are continuing to improve.”

Mathew Locke of Port Angeles shot a 46 to tie for medalist honors with North Kitsap’s Justice Jagodzinske.

Skyler Cobb added a 48, and Derek Sparks and Nate Drake each carded rounds of 49 to round out the Riders’ contributors.

Logan Storm led Chimacum with a 50. Shawn Storey added a 52, and Nate Miller and Brayden Yingling each totaled 55.

Port Angeles (4-3) visits league-leading Sequim (7-0) on Tuesday.

Chimacum (4-5) visits Kingston on Tuesday.

Girls Golf

Port Angeles 257, Chimacum 268, North Kitsap 273

PORT ANGELES — Erin Crouch earned medalist honors for the Cowboys with a round of 60, but the Roughriders won the match on a sunny but soggy Peninsula Golf Club layout Wednesday.

Gillian Elofson and Aliyah Johnston each carded 61 on the front nine to lead Port Angeles. Kat McMahan shot 65 for the Riders and Erin Fraser and Melissa Olson totaled 70 apiece.

Delana Horner and Janae Murray added rounds of 68 for Chimacum.

Port Angeles (3-4) hosts Kingston, Montesano and Shelton today in the Duke Streeter Invitational at Peninsula Golf Club.

Chimacum (2-5) visits Kingston on Tuesday.

Track and Field

Forks at Pirate Classic

ADNA — The Spartans performed well with the Forks girls setting two PRs and winning four individual events to finish second, while the boys were fourth at the 12-team Pirate Classic.

Elma won the girls meet with 140 points, while the Spartans totaled 78.

Marissa Bailey and Enid Ensastegui each won two events for Forks.

Bailey set a season-best time of 29.13 seconds in the 200-meter run, and the senior set a personal-record time of 1:04.17 to win the 400.

Ensastegui, also a senior, set a personal-best time of 5:58.64 in the 1,600 and a season-best time of 12:47.49 in the 3,200.

Pe Ell won the boys meet with 93 points while Forks tied for fourth with Napavine (56 points).

Matthew Larson was the lone winner for the Spartans boys, taking the 3,200 in 11:50.04.

Wesley Camacho notched two person records with second-place times in the 800 (2:17.97) and 1,600 (5:07.8).

Cole Baysinger was second in the discus with a distance of 131 feet, 5 inches.

Sequim boys second in home meet

SEQUIM — Murray Bingham swept the long-distance runs to lead the Sequim boys to a second place finish in a four-team meet against North Kitsap, Olympic and Coupeville on Wednesday.

The Wolves totaled 69 points, while the Vikings picked up the boys team win with 105 points.

Bingham ran the 1,600 meters in 4:47 and the 3,200 in 10:28.24.

Four other Wolves athletes won individual events.

Junior Alec Shingleton set a personal-record time of 52.84 on his way to a win in the 400; Riley Martin won the 110 hurdles (15.39); Riley Cowan threw the javeling 159-01 and Liam Byrne cleared 12 feet in the pole vault.

On the girls side, North Kitsap totaled 117 points to win the team event. Sequim was fourth with 40 points.

The Wolves won two individual events. Elizabeth Sweet cleared 10 feet in the pole vault and Kaitlyn Viada won the javelin with a throw of 92-01.

Sequim 5, Bremerton 2

SEQUIM — Amanda He and Arlene Law were picked as players of the match for their play in their respective doubles matches by Wolves coach Mark Textor after an Olympic League win over the Knights.

He teamed with Tea Gauthun to win their No. 3 doubles match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Law and Eden Johnson also swept their No. 4 doubles match 6-0, 6-0.
