Girls Soccer

Port Angeles 4, Sequim 1

SEQUIM — After losing to Sequim at Civic Field three weeks ago, the Roughriders evened the score with a 4-1 win over Sequim.

Port Angeles (5-5, 7-6) is in a tight battle for third place in the Olympic League with two games left against Sequim (5-4, 8-5) and North Mason (4-5, 4-6-2).

In the previous three games between the Roughriders and Wolves, Port Angeles won in overtime and the two teams split penalty kick wins.

Riders’ freshman Delany Wenzl scored two goals, while Emily Boyd had a goal and an assist.

According to coach Scott Mosely, this game likewise started close with little scoring early. The first score of the match came in the 39th minute, when a Sierra Robinson shot hit the crossbar and bounced back to Wenzl, who kicked the ball into the open net.

The Riders then scored three scores in just seven minutes. Boyd took a Sierra Robinson pass and scored in the 60th minute for her eighth goal of the season. In the 67th minute, Taylor Clark converted a penalty kick after a Port Angeles player was fouled in the box for her seventh goal of the season.

In the 70th minute, Wenzl earned her second goal of the game on a Boyd pass. It was Wenzl’s 4th goal of the season and her first multi-goal game as a Roughrider.

“It felt amazing to score two goals especially in a rivalry game and it’s a really memorable moment as a freshman,” Wenzl said.

Sequim earned a late goal in the 78th minute.

“There was a lot of built up stress around this game,” said Moseley.

“It had all the elements of a great game—our biggest rivals, seeking revenge for a home loss and with playoff positions on the line. I was so proud of the girls and how they responded. They played a smart, calm and confident game.”

Moseley also likes the friendly rivalry aspect of the game as many Sequim and Port Angeles players are close friends and play on the same winter select soccer team through Peninsula College. “We are maybe the only teams in area high school sports that have players that also are teammates in the offseason. It puts an interesting and positive twist on the games.”

Sequim hosted North Mason on Saturday, while North Mason travels to Port Angeles next Tuesday in another important Olympic League clash. These games are critical to all three teams for the playoff push as one of the three teams will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Forks 3, Neah Bay 0

NEAH BAY — The Spartans stayed hot, picking up a road sweep of the Red Devils 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 in a nonleague match.

“The girls are peaking at the perfect time of the season,” Forks coach Patty Brandt said.

“I’m looking forward to postseason play.”

Rian Peters led the Spartans with 10 kills, while Bailey Queen added six and Jayden Olsen and Bailee Kratzer had four apiece.

Setter Julia Lausche distributed 24 assists and Kierra Brandt had four service aces.

Skyler Dematties served 100 percent for the week.

Forks (2-3, 8-4) will wrap Evergreen League 1A play with three matches this week. The Spartans visit Tenino (0-6, 2-10) on Monday.

Boys Tennis

Olympic League Tournament

Port Angeles’ Kenny Soule and Hayden Woods played for third and fourth place in the Olympic 2A League Championship Singles’ Tournament, but came up short.

“There is little doubt they will be league championship but came up short Friday,” said coach Gilbert Stockton.

Soule split sets in his Saturday match against Ian Schmid of Kingston and Woods lost to Turner Hibbs, a senior from North Kitsap. A coin flip gave fifth place to Woods and 6th to Soule.

“They both [had] great efforts and displays of great tennis,” said Stockton.

Stockton said the future looks bright for his young team.

“This season has been a rewarding journey that tested everyone on the team. I am proud of the efforts made by everyone on the team. Next year will be the season where all the hard work expended this year comes to fruition,” he said.

Soule won his first round match earlier in the week against Sam Horn from North Kitsap, then after losing his next match to Turner Hibbs, also from North Kitsap, he beat Aaron Tang of Bremerton. He then had to play teammate Tyler Nickerson, beating him 6-2, 6-2.

“The two of them brought out the best in each other and there was great tennis to watch. Tyler Nickerson finished up his high school tennis career playing his best,” Stockton said.

Woods began by beating Tang in a marathon match 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. He lost to Prab Sangha of Olympia then beat Damon Litle of Sequim 6-3, 6-0 and Raymond Lam of Sequim 6-1, 6-4.
