Baseball Klahowya 3, Chimacum 2

CHIMACUM — Down to their final out, the Cowboys plated two runs but couldn’t complete the rally in an Olympic League loss to the Eagles on Wednesday.

Klahowya starter Tanyr Gagnon had 15 strikeouts on the game and fanned his final pair of batters to open the bottom of the seventh. But Gagnon allowed back-to-back walks to Jonah Diehl and Issac Purser and was pulled for reliever Hunter Wallis.

Clayton Smith’s pinch-hit single scored Diehl and moved Purser to third.

Chimacum pulled off a double steal to pull within one run when Purser stole home and Smith moved into scoring position with a steal of second base, but the Cowboys fouled out to end the contest.

Chimacum (0-1, 4-4) will visit Tenino for a nonleague doubleheader on Saturday.

Port Angeles 18, Bremerton 3, 5 innings

BREMERTON — The Roughriders continued their strong start to Olympic League play with a big win over the Knights.

“I felt that the pitchers did a great job challenging hitters and utilizing our defense,” Port Angeles coach Karl Myers said. “Jadon Seibel got his first high school win which was awesome for a guy who has been working extremely hard on his craft.”

Myers also liked the team’s approach at the plate.

“It’s easy to get excited about the hits and runs but our approach was solid for five innings,” he said. “Every guy up there was focused on their job and staying within themselves, not trying to do to much. Gavin Guerrero and Wyatt Hall both had incredible two-strike battles, both resulting in base hits.”

Myers also praised Brody Merritt for his work at bat.

“Brody had a great day at the plate going 2 for 3 with a double and driving in four runs,” Myers said.

“Gavin had a huge day as well going 4 for 5, driving in two runs and making a number of tough plays at shortstop. Gav has been playing at an incredibly high level all year. It’s been fun to see him take advantage of his senior year.”

Port Angeles (3-0, 5-3) visited Kingston late Thursday.

The Riders will visit Lynden at noon Saturday.
