PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles trio tosses 1-hitter against Chimacum

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles got the better of their North Olympic Peninsula counterparts, holding Chimacum to one hit in a 4-1 nonleague baseball contest at Volunteer Field.

The Riders used a pitcher-by-committee strategy in Friday’s game, sending three hurlers to the hill, and all three were effective in limiting the Cowboys’ bats.

Dane Bradow tossed three strikeouts in his two innings of work to open the game.

Colton McGuffey had two strikeouts in three innings of work and Andrew Pena allowed one run on one hit in two innings pitched for Port Angeles.

Freshman Brody Merritt doubled twice for the Riders and classmate Ethan Flodstrom tripled and scored.

Ben Basden also singled, stole a base and scored for Port Angeles (3-2, 5-3).

Issac Purser singled and scored Chimacum’s lone run.

The Riders host Kingston (2-1, 3-1) on Monday.

The Cowboys (1-2, 3-4) host Port Townsend (0-3, 0-5).

Boys Soccer Sequim 5, Olympic 1

BREMERTON — The Wolves peppered the net with 12 shots on goal in the first half, three of them beating the Trojans’ goalkeeper, as Sequim opened up a 3-0 lead at halftime on its way to a league win.

Konnor Parrish assisted teammates on two of those first-half scores, setting up Ryan Tolberd for the Wolves’ first goal in the 17th minute and then finding Christian Rocha in the 34th minute.

“Konner was man of the match for us,” coach Dave Brasher said. “He played real well up front.”

Adrian Funston scored the third Sequim goal, connecting on a strike in the 38th minute.

“We had a bunch of chances but their goalie was making some great saves, so we kind of wore them down,” Brasher said of the first half.

Josiah Urquiah cemented the Wolves’ lead with an unassisted score just after halftime.

Olympic got one back when a free kick from the corner snuck in, but Liam Harris countered late with a header goal off of a corner kick by Addison Berg.

Brasher said Josh Gonzalez was a defensive highlight at center back.

Sequim (4-3, 5-3-2) will visit 1A Klahowya on Wednesday.

Port Angeles 6, Coupeville 0

COUPEVILLE — The Roughriders scored early and often in a nonleague win over the Wolves.

Grayson Peet collected goals in the 5th and 24th minute to give Port Angeles some breathing room.

Peet finished off a pass up the middle from Jesse Salgado from close range on the first score and then collected a nice through pass from Stuart Methner and muscled his way through for a well-placed shot on the second, according to Riders coach Chris Saari.

Andrew St. George scored in the 33rd and Salgado made it 4-0 at halftime with a goal off of a Michael Scott assist in the 38th minute.

“Andrew collected a clearance near the top of the penalty box and made space for a strong left footed shot that found the right corner of the goal,” Saari said.

“Jesse collected a nice long ball from Michael Scott, settled it and finished it with the inside of his foot.”

A pair of Riders scored their first varsity goals in the second half.

Shawn Flannigan scored off an assist from Stuart Methner in the 53rd minute.

“Stuart penetrated the right wing along the endline and cut the ball back across the goal where Flannigan tapped it in with the inside of his left foot,” Saari said.

Karsten Hertzog found the net with help from Kenny Soule in the 80th minute.

“Kenny’s corner kick found Karsten waiting at the top of the penalty box and Karsten hit the ball first time with his left foot into the left side of the goal on the bounce,” Saari said.

Peet and Salgado were the team’s offensive players of the match, Cameron Butler was praised for his defensive play and Flannigan, Hertzog, St. George and Methner were the transition players of the match.

Port Angeles goalkeeper Lorenzo De La Torre earned his fourth shutout of the season.

The third-place Riders (4-2, 7-3) visit second-place Kingston (5-2, 6-3-1) on Tuesday.

Boys Golf Sequim 295, Kingston 414

SEQUIM — The Wolves came out firing in the first 18-hole match of the spring and beat the Buccaneers soundly, according to coach Bill Shea.

[Our] top three players tied for low honors as freshmen Paul Jacobsen and Andrew Vanderberg along with sophomore Blake Wiker all shot even-par 72.

“This is a career best tournament round for Blake,” Shea said.

“His previous best was 78.”

Josiah Carter also posted a career-low round of 79 for the Wolves. Jarrett Allen also carded a personal-best round for Sequim after shooting a 95.

“This brings [our] record to 6-0, and has [the team] setting their eyes on a strong state individual and team finish,” Shea said.

“To have four players shoot in the 70s without a senior this early in the season is very promising.”

Sequim hosts Chimacum on Tuesday at 2:45 p.m.

Central Kitsap 382, Port Angeles 397

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders fell to Class 3A Central Kitsap in a nonleague match, the team’s first 18-hole match of the season, at Peninsula Golf Club.

“It was a good learning experience for all the players as they had to slog through their first 18-hole match,” coach Gil Stockton said.

“With the course as wet as it is, it’s a long hike and the guys demonstrated their grit and perseverance by maintaining a good attitude given the conditions and taking more swings than they would like.”

Mathew Locke led Port Angeles with a round of 93. Logan Kovalenko was one stroke back with a 94 for the Riders and Parker Elias and Cameron Fouts each carded 105.

Miles Whitney was medalist after shooting an 88 for the Cougars.

The Riders (3-3, 3-4) host Klahowya (3-1) on Tuesday.
