PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Nelson’s two-out double leads Chimacum to softball victory

CHIMACUM — Chimacum’s Bradyn Nelson doubled and scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cowboys edged Klahowya 5-4 in the first Olympic League 1A Division contest of the season between the two rivals.

Nelson’s hit would have been a triple but the ball became wedged under the outfield fence, limiting her to a ground-rule double.

She moved to third on a passed ball and later scored the winning run when the Eagles’ catcher threw the ball into the outfield.

“It was a tight game,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said. “They have a real good pitcher [Amber Bumbalough]. It took our hitting awhile to get going. We got six hits by six different players.”

Eldridge said the team’s first hit came from sophomore Amelia Foster.

“She’s not the biggest girl, but she got a base hit,” Eldridge said. “Everybody was struggling and she got a hit, so that lifted us a bit.”

Shanya Nisbet hit a solo home run for the Cowboys and twin sister Mechelle notched a two-run double against Bumbalough, who is their cousin.

Eldridge said Grace Yaley also had a big RBI triple.

Pitcher Holly Snider allowed eight hits and four runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out four to pick up the win for Chimacum (2-0, 3-1). The Cowboys host North Kitsap on Tuesday.

BREMERTON — Port Angeles pitcher Nizhoni Wheeler celebrated her 18th birthday by tossing a two-hit shutout and Nikaila Price hit two home runs as the Roughriders took down the Olympic Trojans 10-0.

Wheeler struck out 15 in Thursday’s Olympic League 2A Division victory.

“Nizhoni Wheeler pitched a gem on her birthday,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said.

“She dominated from start to finish and had all of her pitches working.”

Price connected on a solo home run and also launched a grand slam.

“Nikaila Price continued her hot hitting with two home runs, and her grand slam in the seventh put the game away for good,” Steinman said.

The Riders (2-0, 3-1) visit rival Sequim (1-0, 2-2) on Wednesday. The Wolves’ game with North Kitsap on Friday was postponed due to rain.

BREMERTON — Port Angeles jumped all over Olympic early and cruised to a 9-1 win in the Roughriders’ opening game in Olympic League 2A Division action.

The Riders got ahead 3-0 in the first inning, then pushed the score to 6-0 by the fourth. Winning pitcher Colton McGuffey gave up three hits and one earned run in 4 1/3 innings. Dane Bradow pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and no earned runs. Port Angeles pitchers gave up just three walks all game.

Noah McGoff and Luke Angevine combined to go 8-for-8 with four doubles. McGoff added three RBIs while Ben Basden had two hits and two RBIs.

“This is a really exciting group and [Thursday night], they showed the potential they have,” said coach Karl Myers. “Sixteen guys came together and I couldnt be more proud of the way they battled hard for us all game long. So many great performances from a bunch of different guys, overall a great first league win for us.”

Myers said McGoff and Angevine were “dialed in all night and when they got their pitch, they gook advantage.”

“[Catcher] Tyrus Beckett was a wall tonight, not a single ball went to the backstop he made some great blocks and kept their running game at bay,” Myers said.

Myers also said McGuffey and Bradow “both attacked the zone with multiple pitches and kept them off balance and limited free bases.”

Port Angeles (1-1, 1-0) is next scheduled to play at Port Townsend at 4:15 p.m. Monday.

Klahowya 7, Chimacum 1

CHIMACUM — Chimacum came out flat in warmups and stayed flat in a 7-1 Olympic League 1A Division baseball loss to Klahowya, according to coach Bob Eldridge.

“It shouldn’t have been that bad, we just didn’t hit the ball at all,” Eldridge said.

“We only had one hit. Everybody struggled.”

Freshman Carson McDonnell managed the team’s lone hit.

Cole Dotson started on the mound for the Cowboys.

“He did good enough to win, but the rest of us kind of let him down,” Eldridge said.

“You can’t win without any hits and we made a couple of errors, a few boo-boos.”

Chimacum (1-1, 2-2) will host Forks in a nonleague game on Monday.

PORT ANGELES — The Riders picked up key league points with a win over the Trojans at Civic Field on Friday.

“It took [us] some time to gain control of the scoreline of the game and Olympic stayed in the game into the second half,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

Saari said Andrew St. George scored on a nice individual effort goal beating several Olympic defenders and slotting the ball past the goalie as he came out to put the Riders on the board in the 13th minute.

Late in the first half Tom Lismonde hit a half volley that came off of St. George’s foot. The ball hit the under side of the cross bar in the right corner and bounced down and over the goal line to put Port Angeles up 2-0 going into the half.

Saari said The Riders got rolling early in the second half on a nice free kick through ball by Grayson Peet that Ben Schneider put past the Olympic goalie.

Tom Lismonde then got fouled in the box and finished his own penalty kick calmly and confidently. Schneider got his second goal off a long throw from Kenny Soule in the 55th minute.

All of the team saw playing time in the match as the Riders took control of the game early in the 2nd half.

Junior goalkeeper Lorenzo De La Torre wasn’t tested too much by the Trojans but earned the team’s first shutout of the season.

Saari named Schneider, Michael Scott and Lismonde and St. George as his offensive, defensive and transition players of the match, respectively.

Port Angeles (2-1, 3-1) hosts Sequim (2-1, 2-1) at Civic Field at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

North Kitsap 2, Sequim 0

SEQUIM — A tough 10-minute stretch in the second half was the difference in an evenly-matched game between the Wolves and the league-leading Vikings.

“I was super encouraged,” coach Dave Brasher said. “I thought we played really well.”

Brasher said his team had the better chances in a scoreless first half.

“Liam Harris had a shot on goal, and then Josiah Urquia had a hard shot that hit the keeper in the hand and we couldn’t clean it up.”

Freshman Navy Thomas-Brenske made his first start in goal and Brasher said he was “outstanding.”

In the 49th minute, North Kitsap earned a corner kick after Thomas-Brenske made a good save on a Vikings shot.

“They got a corner and scored on the corner out of a scramble,” Brasher said.

“We cleared it once and they knocked it in.”

On the play, Sequim defender Brandon Benson was elbowed in the side of the head.

“He got up and seemed all right, but ended up tripping a guy and giving up a penalty kick,” Brasher said. “We pulled him from the game and Navy made the save on the penalty kick to keep us in it.”

With Benson out, the team had to realign its formation and North Kitsap ended up sending a ball through the defense for a breakaway goal and a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute.

“A little 5-10 minute burst and it was 2-0,” Brasher said.

We pressured at the end, Liam got called offsides, and Evan [James] had a header that went just wide.”

Sequim (2-1, 2-1-0) will play Forks at Peninsula College at 4 p.m. Monday.

Parker Elias led Port Angeles with a round of 53. Cameron Fouts shot a 60, Jonas Kongerslev a 61 and Carson Wilder added a 62 for the Riders.

“The main culprit today was consistency and a bit of intimidation with a new and difficult golf course.”
