PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Forks softball seals district berth; Spartans soccer moves closer to league title

FORKS — Forks softball pitchers Britney Dean and Chloe Leverington combined to give up just two hits and struck out 19 out of 21 batters in the Spartans’ 9-0 win over Tenino that guarantees Forks a spot in the postseason.

Dean went four innings, striking out 11 while giving up one hit. Leverington wrapped up the final three innings, striking out eight while giving up a hit.

At the plate, Rian Peters went 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Leverington went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Myah Rondeau hitting a two-out two-run double.

The win solidified Forks’ fourth-place spot in the Evergreen 1A League. The Spartans will play the No. 1 seed out of the Trico League in the Southwest District 4 1A softball tournament, likely Castle Rock, beginning on May 16.

Forks is 2-5 in the Evergreen 1A League, but that’s misleading, as the Evergreen 1A is one of the toughest, if not the toughest softball league in 1A. Defending state champion Montesano (and favorite to repeat as state champion) is undefeated in league while second-place Elma is 12-3 overall … with two of those losses to Montesano. Outside of the Evergreen 1A League, Forks is 7-1 with wins over 2A Sequim and Quilcene, which played for the 2B state championship last year.

Forks (2-5, 8-7) finishes its league season at home at 4 p.m. today against Elma.

Boys Soccer Forks 2, Montesano 0

MONTESANO — Forks moved closer to clinching the Evergreen League championship and a bye to the Southwest District Tournament by shutting out Montesano 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Willie Geronimo scored his third goal of the season for the Spartans since moving up from defender to playing on the left side in midfield.

His score came with three minutes to go before halftime on an assist from freshman Tony Hernandez-Flores.

“We joke about Willie’s goals being garbage goals because he’s always in the right spot at the right time,” coach Joe Morton said. “And there he was on the left side and the ball was bouncing around in the box and Tony played it out to him and he hit it.

“It was a big pick-me-up heading to halftime. We were a little flat in the first half. We hadn’t played since April 19.”

Forks came out of the gate strong in the second half, scoring four minutes in on a strike by Hernandez-Flores, assisted by Rafael Terrones.

Rafael was in for Willie on the top left side of the box and he made a nice pass through the defenders to Tony. Tony’s shot must have went past three different defenders, the goalie never had a chance.”

Morton praised the team’s entire defense for its work in earning the shutout for goalie Gabe Terrones.

Forks (5-0-0, 10-0-1) will try to cap an unbeaten regular season and earn the league title with a win against second-place Hoquiam (4-1-0, 10-2-0) tonight.

The Spartans beat the Grizzlies 4-2 earlier this month, so Morton said Hoquiam has to win by three or more goals to edge Forks for the crown.

Sequim 5, Bremerton 1

SEQUIM — The Wolves locked up second place in the Olympic League 2A Division capping the regular-season with a win over the Knights.

Sequim lost out on a chance at the league championship when they fell to Kingston 3-2 on April 27.

However, they still had work to do, as they could have finished as low as fourth with a loss to Bremerton on Tuesday.

Sequim went out and took care of business, Tuesday night.

The Wolves ended up tied for second with North Kitsap. The Vikings and Wolves split a pair of matches, ended up with identical 9-3 league records and had the identical number of points — 27.

The tiebreaker became record against better teams. Sequim split two games against 10-2 Kingston, while Kingston swept two games over North Kitsap.

Coach Dave Brasher said the Wolves will begin play at the West Central District III tournament Saturday either in Silverdale or North Kitsap. The time, place and opponent haven’t been determined yet. The opponent will be the No. 8 seed out of the South Puget Sound League and Brasher said it appears that will be either Foss or Orting.

Brasher said the team is confident going into district. The playoffs in soccer are not kind as Saturday’s game is a loser-out contest despite the Wolves being a No. 2 seed.

“We came within a couple of inches of winning the league. We’re playing really well, everyone is contributing. We led the league in goals (52 in 12 league games) and we’re getting goals from all over the place,” he said.

“It will be fun to see how far we can go,” Brasher said.

Against Bremerton, Ryan Tolberd scored a pair of gaols, while Eli Gish, Hayuk Minano and Addison Berg all had goals. Liam Harris had two assists, while Evan James had an assist. Liam Stevenson, normally a keeper, also tallied an assist playing offense.

Nick Janikic nearly had a shutout in goal, but Bremerton managed its only goal in the final minute on a penalty kick.

Baseball Olympic 11, Sequim 0

BREMERTON — The Sequim boys could only manage two hits against a pair of Olympic pitchers, getting beaten 11-0 and eliminated from the postseason.

A win Tuesday would have left the Wolves at 5-7 in Olympic League 2A Division play, tied for fourth place with Kingston. They finish at 4-8, tied for fifth.

Keaton Dean and Evan Tunquist combined to two-hit the Wolves. Silas Thomas and Joey Oliver had the only hits for Sequim.

The Wolves finish their season 8-9 overall.
