PREP SOFTBALL: Sequim ends one streak, PA’s streak still alive

SEQUIM — Sequim softball gets some bragging rights, while Port Angeles gets to keep its league unbeaten streak intact.

Playing a fill-in game Monday so Sequim could have a Senior’s Night game, that did not count as a league game, the Wolves, who nearly beat the Roughriders earlier this year, finally got the better of their North Olympic Peninsula rival, beating Port Angeles 6-5.

The Wolves scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to pull the game out.

It was only Port Angeles’ second loss of the year. It was also the first time the Wolves had beaten the Riders since 2014. The Riders had beaten the Wolves 10 straight games.

However, because it was an extra nonleague game added to the schedule, it was not a league loss. So, Port Angeles maintains its 46-game league winning streak.

One streak is broken. The other remains alive.

“It was a great game to coach and get ready for districts. Great pitching and defense. Key hits at the right moments, and it’s always fun to play Port Angeles,” said Sequim coach Tim Lusk.

“Their undefeated league streak is still intact so we’ll have to work on that next season,” Lusk said.

Sequim’s Shelby Jones kept the powerful Port Angeles lineup under control, scattering 11 hits, but walking none while striking out five. The Wolves’ defense also played errorless ball behind Jones.

The Roughriders came in to Monday’s game averaging 13.5 runs a game over their past eight games. Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman credited Jones with pitching an “outstanding game.”

At the plate, Latisha Robideau and Jayla Julmist were both 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Isabelle Dennis was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Bobbi Sparks had a double and a run scored, while Jessie Dominguez had a hit, a run, an RBI and a walk.

For the Roughriders, Natalie Steinman was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Sierra Robinson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Jaida Cargo was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, while Erin Edwards had a double and an RBI.

Callie Hall pitched three innings for Port Angeles, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out two. Hope O’Connor pitched the final three innings, giving up four runs on three hits, with a walk and a strikeout.

The Riders (11-0, 16-2), league champions of the Olympic League 2A Division, finish their regular season against Kingston at 4:15 p.m. today at the Dry Creek fields. That is a league game as the Riders look to finish Olympic League 2A play unbeaten for the fourth straight year. They begin postseason play May 18 at the West Central District 3 tournament as the No. 1 seed out the Olympic League 2A.

Sequim (6-6, 7-12) has a nonleague game at Coupeville at 2:30 p.m. today. The Wolves will be the No. 4 seed out of the Olympic League 2A at the West Central District 3 tournament.

Port Angeles JV 16, Quilcene 15

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles JV beat Quilcene 16-15.

Kiana Watson Charles had two doubles and two runs scored for the Roughriders JV and was the winning pitcher. Abby Root and Emma Olsen scored two runs, while Aiesha Latourette was 2 for 3 with a double and scored a run.

Quilcene (6-0, 10-5) plays a doubleheader at home today against Muckleshoot beginning at 3 p.m.
