PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings blank Riders in soccer; PA softball wins fifth straight league title

POULSBO — In their final regular-season match, the Port Angeles boys soccer team was blanked 3-0 in a road match against North Kitsap.

With a win, the Roughriders could have leapfrogged past North Kitsap and Sequim into second place in the league, but they will settle for fourth in the Olympic League 2A Division at 7-5 (22 points). Port Angeles, 10-5-1 overall, will begin play in the district tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, going up against the No. 6 seed out of the South Puget Sound League.

Coach Chris Saari said North Kitsap capitalized on some defensive lapses by the Riders to go up 2-0 by half. Port Angeles had a good chance in the first half when Andrew Methner slipped through the North Kitsap defense only to have his shot saved by Vikings keeper Giacoma Battu.

Saari said the Riders had moments of good passing in the first half and the North Kitsap goals came against the run of play on some poor defending from Port Angeles.

The Riders had another good opportunity in the second half when Andrew St. George volleyed a shot from close range over the crossbar after a Kenny Soule long throw.

North Kitsap’s third goal in the 55th minute came on a corner kick.

Saari named St. George his best transition player of the match. He said St. George stood out in the midfield, winning individual battles and distributing the ball well in the first half.

Sequim at 8-3 in league (24 points) can still tie North Kitsap (27 points) for second in the league. The Wolves played Bremerton (4-7, 11 points) after press deadline Tuesday.

Natalie Steinman did much of the damage at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. Chimacum 2, Port Townsend 1

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys got a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh from Issac Purser and a two-hit performance from Matthew Bainbridge and Cole Dotson to outlast the rival Redhawks in a tight pitchers’ duel.

Port Townsend’s Noa Montoya pitched well enough Monday to win, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking just one, but the Cowboy pitchers were just a little bit better.

Bainbridge went the first five innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run, while striking out four and walking one. Dotson came in to relieve and pitched two perfect innings, giving up no hits, no walks and striking out all six batters he faced. Dotson gets credited with the win.

Jonathon Holt scored the Redhawks’ run in the third on a couple of Chimacum errors. Montoya and the Redhawks maintained that 1-0 lead all the way to the seventh.

Arron Serrato started the rally for the Cowboys, leading off the inning with a single. Koby Eldridge walked while Serrato moved to third on a steal.

Montoya was able to strike out the next two Chimacum batters while Eldridge moved up to second base. Purser then ended the game with a single to the outfield, scoring Serrato and Eldridge.

Purser finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Bainbridge was 2 for 3. Serrato and Brebberman each had a hit.

For the Redhawks, Marc Evans and Logan Donahue had hits.

Sequim 13, Bremerton 4

Editor’s Note: Sequim was beaten 11-0 Tuesday evening by Olympic and was eliminated from playoff contention.

BREMERTON — Sequim kept its slim playoff hopes alive, erupting for eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to blow open a close game over Bremerton.

The Wolves won 13-4 to remain one game back of Kingston for the final Olympic League 2A playoff spot. Sequim, 4-7 in league, needed to beat Olympic on the road Tuesday (Results of that game were after press deadline). Olympic is a good team (7-4,10-6), so that is a tall order. Working in the Wolves’ favor is that they shown they can beat the good teams, as they beat second-place North Kitsap earlier this season.

Also working in Sequim’s favor is that Kingston (5-6, 8-7) played on the road against North Kitsap (8-3, 11-5) on Tuesday.

In Monday’s game, the contest was tied 4-4 in the fourth. The Wolves ran away from the Knights down the stretch, scoring one run in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh. Meanwhile, Eric Washburn came in to pitch in relief and shut the Knights down, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up just two hits and no runs.

Silas Thomas, Ian Miller and Michael Young all had two hits for the Wolves, with Young hitting two doubles and scoring two runs. Thomas and Miller each drove in two runs. Johnnie Young had a hit, three walks, five stolen bases and scored three runs.

Sequim’s game Tuesday was the Wolves’ final regular-season game. If Sequim qualified for the postseason, they would begin play at the No. 4 seed out of the Olympic League 2A Division against the No. 4 seed out of the South Puget Sound League at 9 a.m. Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School.
