Girls Soccer Port Angeles 4, Kingston 0

KINGSTON — Freshman Millie Long staked the Roughriders to a one-goal lead with a strike in the opening minutes of play and Port Angeles opened the game up offensively in the second half to pick up its first Olympic League victory.

“Millie Long opened the scoring in the third minute when she gathered a Kyrsten McGuffey pass, outraced a Kingston defender and finished strong with her left foot,” Riders coach Scott Moseley said.

“Long almost added another 2 minutes later but her strong shot was barely defected by the Kingston keeper off the crossbar.”

Moseley said the game became a battle of the midfield for the remainder of the half, with each team unable to produce a goal.

In the 53rd minute, Port Angeles began to exert its dominance and pulled further ahead when right back Delaney Wenzl played a perfect split pass to Long, whose one-touch cross traveled to the far post and Sierra Robinson, who crushed a header into the goal from close range.

Wenzl was involved with the Riders’ third goal when she won the ball on the right side, pushed forward and sent a cross in front of the box that a Kingston player knocked in for an own goal.

Long finished the scoring in the 64th minute off of an assist from Shanzi Cosgrove when she took the ball, cut inside and shot to the far post for her fourth goal of the season.

“We made a position switch 10 minutes into the second half by pushing Wenzl to right back. She effectively got involved in the offense and very quickly we had many chances and three goals,” Moseley said.

“The team is coming together well and players are beginning to understand their positions and roles. Both Lola Del Guzzi-Flores and Aliyah Johnston played excellent games with their passing and offensive movement.”

The Riders have outscored their last two opponents 10-0.

Moseley named Long and Robinson as offensive players of the game, Cosgrove earned defensive honors and McGuffey was transition player.

Port Angeles (1-0-0, 2-2-0) host Bremerton on Tuesday.

Sequim 4, Coupeville 1

SEQUIM — Some halftime changes helped lead to a four-goal second half and a nonleague win for the Sequim Wolves.

“[We] played well but struggled to find space in the first half,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. “But with a few minor adjustments [we were] able to open up the field and find the back of the net.”

Yana Hoesel got Sequim on the scoreboard with a goal in the 44th minute. Hope Glasser scored twice in the span of three minutes (52nd and 55th) and Jessica Dietzman added the final tally in the 60th minute.

Goalkeeper Claire Henninger made 13 saves.

Sequim (0-1-0, 2-2-0) hosts North Mason on Tuesday.

Volleyball Sequim 3, Forks 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves swept a short-handed Spartans squad 25-14, 25-8, 25-11 in a nonleague contest.

“The setters Kalli [Wiker] and Brittney [Gale] did a great job spreading out our attack,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said.

Isabelle Dennis served 12 of 12 with three aces and led the Wolves with six serve receive passes.

Gale added eight aces, half of Sequim’s total of 16.

Arelene Law and Latisha Robideau tallied four kills apiece and “dominated the net,” according to Webber-Heilman.

She also praised Tayler Breckenridge, Bobbi Sparks and Gale for “getting some great digs.”

The Spartans were playing down a few players.

“We had a few players home sick,” Forks coach Jenn LeDuke said.

Bailey Queen led the Spartans with three kills and tied with Rian Peters with three blocks.

Peters and Jayden Olson each had service aces and Olson led Forks with four assists.

The Spartans (3-1) host Neah Bay on Tuesday.

Sequim (1-1, 2-1) hosts North Mason (2-1, 3-1) on Tuesday.

Kingston 3, Port Angeles 0

KINGSTON — The Roughriders fared better with each set but fell 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 to the Buccaneers.

“The girls never gave up tonight and fought until the end,” coach Christine Halberg said.

“We had a couple chances to take the third set but just didn’t finish. We keep improving each game as a whole.”

Halberg said Devin Edwards had a great game with three kills of nine Kingston attempts with no errors and three digs.

Aeverie Politika added four kills and two blocks. Brennan Gray and Nacia Bohman led the team with five digs apiece and Natalie Steinman and Michelle Alvarez each served for aces.

Ava Brenkman added two blocks in the middle.

Port Angeles (0-2, 0-3) hosts Bremerton on Tuesday.

Quilcene 4th at Sundome tourney

YAKIMA — The Rangers advanced to the semifinals against 32 Class 1B, 2B and 1A teams from across the state at the Sundome Tournament on Friday.

“Overall the serve receive at the tournament was excellent and kept us in system for a majority of the games,” Quilcene Joni Crowell said. “We are going to spend the next several practices refining our coverage systems, as the [Napavine] Tigers revealed a few holes in our defense with their powerful offense.”

The Rangers rolled through pool play beating Onalaska 28-26, 25-9; Sunnyside Christian 25-11, 25-15 and Montesano 25-15, 25-17.

Quilcene claimed a quarterfinal with against Kiona-Benton 17-25, 25-9, 15-6 but fell to Napavine in the semis 17-25, 17-25.

The Rangers were coming off a four-set Sea-Tac League win over Tacoma Baptist on Thursday.

Emily Hitt led the team with 19 kills, a perfect serve ratio of 14 for 14 with two aces, and had two digs and two assists.

Katie Love had 10 kills and six digs for Quilcene, while Pearl Munn added two digs and three blocks and Abbygael Weller chipped in with 12 for 12 serving and an ace, nine kills and 10 digs.

[We] started off slow in the first game, however, I think that dropping the first game was an excellent opportunity to see if they are a ‘fight back’ team.

“By the second game they really started to come together as a team and improve their communication skills, as well as reading the other team. I saw this tenacity repeated at the Sundome tournament against the strong Napavine Tigers, where the Lady Rangers fought for every point the entire game. Emily Hitt, Katie Love and Abbygael Weller were strong at the net with Alannah Carron setting all her options.”

Boys Tennis Port Angeles 6, Bremerton 1

PORT ANGELES — A team effort highlighted by the play of No. 1 singles player Kenny Soule guided the Roughriders to a match victory over the Knights on Thursday.

“[We] played some terrific tennis to beat the Bremerton Knights 6-1. It was a fun to see almost all the guys, varsity and JV alike, playing with greater confidence, consistency and good, full strokes. They were hitting flatter shots with good pace.

“There were many deserving the team ball but it has to go to Kenny Soule. Kenny struggled at the outset of his first set but regained his focus and went on to win the first set tiebreaker. He then went on to play up to his expectations and won the second. Special mention must be made for Hayden Woods winning his fifth straight match. He is playing good, consistent tennis this season.”

The Roughriders fell 4-3 to Klahowya on Wednesday.

“A tough loss for the guys, but a great learning experience,” Stockton said. “Those that played well gained a heck of a lot more confidence and those that struggled know what needs work. “Kenny Soule got to experience last year’s No. 6 2A player in the state and see how good tennis can get. We all get better by playing those better than us. The team balls go to the doubles team of Hunter Daugherty and Bo Bradow for good play against a very good team.”

Port Angeles (2-2, 3-2) faces Sequim at home on Monday.
