PREP ROUNDUP: Riders soccer wins in fifth straight shutout; Big match with first-place Sequim up next

BREMERTON — Making a formation change after entering the half tied 0-0, the Port Angeles soccer squad scored two goals in the second half to hold off Olympic 2-0 to stay in second place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

The win was also the Roughiders’ fifth-straight shutout.

After a first half that coach Chris Saari called “underwhelming,” changes made at halftime resulted in almost immediate success as Andrew St. George tapped in a goal in the 42nd minute after a cross from Luis Galvan, who picked up the assist.

The Trojans had some dangerous chances in the second half. They came close to a goal when Riders keeper Anton Kathol was able to tip a long-range shot to the crossbar.

Port Angeles added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute on a corner kick taken by Austin Fischer. Stuart Methner headed the kick into the Trojans net as Fischer picked up the assist.

Saari named Methner his offensive player of the match, and Cameron Butler his defensive player of the match. He named St. George, Galvan and Fischer his transition players of the match.

“Cameron Butler provided energy for the Riders at right back and got forward into the attack often in his first game back after missing five games,” Saari said. “Luis Galvan also came back from injury and provided a spark for Port Angeles with his skills, passing and penetrating runs with the ball.

“Stuart Methner and Andrew St. George continue to be impact players … Austin Fischer played better in the second half, his passing and provided great service on his corner kick assist to Stuart Methner,” Saari said.

The second-place Riders (5-1-0, 6-1-0) get a long break, and then coming up next on April 9 will be a monster match at first-place Sequim (6-0-0, 6-0-2), who have not lost a match all year. Port Angeles’ only loss all season has been against Sequim (5-4 for the Wolves).

Since that game on March 12, the Riders have outscored their opponents 15-1 in six straight wins.

Sequim 4, Kingston 2

SEQUIM — Limited to just two substitutes due to injuries, illnesses, a band concert and early spring break vacations, the Wolves stood tall and finished off the first half of the Olympic League schedule unbeaten.

“We had 13 kids in uniform and we started three freshmen,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher, who is in his 24th season as coach of the Wolves, said.

“I can’t remember the last time, if ever, that I started three freshmen.”

Sequim also allowed the Buccaneers to take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, but the Wolves answered relatively quickly.

“We had a pretty good response four minutes later,” Brasher said.

Ryan Tolberd slotted Adrian [Funston] through, the goalkeeper came out and Adrian got it past him and knocked it right in.”

The teams were tied 1-1 at the break.

“Our kids got excited at halftime and thought we could take them,” Brasher said. “They came out strong in second half and took the lead two minutes in.”

Funston notched his second goal of the game in the 47th minute.

“It came off a corner kick by Reid Parker,” Brasher said. “A low, hard kick that deflected through to Adrian.”

Brasher said the Wolves pressed for the third goal but couldn’t find it before Kingston tied the game on a 70th minute header.

Sequim found the winner and an insurance goal late.

“We got a goal with about five minutes to go,” Brasher said. “We were putting pressure on them with another series of corner kicks and they were clearing them out. But Reid crossed one in to the far side and [Kristian] Mingoy was over there. He passed it back to Mike McAleer and he sent one in from about 18 yards out. It was a smoker and he really got a foot on it.”

Freshman Christian Gonzalez scored the insurance goal just before the final whistle with Tolberd adding his second assist.

“Little Mingoy, we stuck him in at right defender and gave him the man of the match,” Brasher said.

“McAleer played great defensively also. [Freshman] Brandon Wagner played well in his first game starting and Eli Gish contributed all over the field.”

Forks 7, Raymond 2

RAYMOND — Playing a new league opponent for the first time, the Forks soccer boys took care of business to stay tied for first place in the Evergreen 1A/2B League with a 7-2 win over Raymond.

Seth Johnson had his second hat trick of the season, giving him six goals in his past three games. Juan Flores, Hugo Sandoval and Luis Perez all scored goals. Oscar Gonzalez also scored a goal on a header on a corner kick from Aristeo Ayala.

“Their field is pretty rough, but they have some good talent. They scored two goals against essentially our JV defense,” said coach Joe Morton.

With the win, the Spartans (3-1, 3-2) essentially remain tied for first in the Evergreen League with Montesano (4-1) and Hoquiam (3-1), though Montesano has played an extra league game.

The Spartans have a nonleague spring break friendly set for 3:30 p.m. Monday at home with Coupeville (2-2, 4-4).

Quilcene 25, Muckleshoot 1

AUBURN — The Ranger girls scored 20 runs in the second inning in crushing Muckleshoot, with Natalie and Madison Coffey doing much of the damage at the plate and Kayla Ward taking care of things on the rubber.

Natalie Coffey went 3 for 4 in Friday’s game, with a triple a grand slam home run, six RBIs and four runs scored, while Madison Coffey was 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs.

Meanwhile, Ward, just an eighth-grader, pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out seven and giving up no earned runs as the Rangers won their Sea-Tac 1B League opener.

Marissa Kieffer was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. McKenzie Kieffer was 2 for 3 and Harmony Scholz was 2 for 3. Brittney Beukes was 1 for 2 with four runs scored and two RBIs.

“Natalie has been a beast for us so far this year. Both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball she has played really well,” said coach Mark Thompson.

“What can I say about Kayla? A year and a half ago she came up to me and said, ‘I am going to be a pitcher.’ Apparently she was serious about that because she is really starting to come into her own in the circle,” Thompson said.

“We played really well in this game. We may be in the midst of a rebuilding project here, but we have players who are serious about getting better, and are serious about defending what is theirs, ” he said.

Quilcene (1-0, 2-3) will next play on April 9 at Evergreen Lutheran.
