PREP ROUNDUP: Riders’ soccer beaten on the road; Sequim and Forks win

BREMERTON — Going up against a team fighting for its playoff life, the Port Angeles soccer boys fell 2-1 to the Bremerton Knights.

Win or lose, the Roughriders were locked into the second-place spot in the Olympic League 2A Division, but the Knights needed to win to get into the fourth spot. It was the Riders’ first loss all season to a team other than undefeated Sequim.

Coach Chris Saari said the Riders controlled possession for most of the game. Port Angeles had 15 shots to Bremerton’s five.

“Bremerton did well to capitalize on a couple Port Angeles defensive lapses scoring early in the sixth minute and late in the 68th minute,” he said.

“Port Angeles had some good scoring chances in the game, but didn’t put them away and it came back to bite them in the end,” Saari said.

Saari said freshman Damon Gundersen did well for Riders in his first varsity start.

“He was not intimidated, played within himself and made simple passes to keep possession,” he said.

Saari named Gunderson and Galvan his transitional players of the game. .

The Roughriders (8-3 24 points, 10-3) host Olympic (1-10 3 points, 1-13-1) at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College (the Riders’ baseball team is at Civic Field that evening) for their final home league match.

The Riders will be looking to gain momentum heading into the West Central 2A District III, also to be played at Sigmar Field, at noon Saturday against the No. 7 seed out of the South Puget Sound 2A League.

Sequim 7, North Mason 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves honored five seniors and two exchange students and five of the seven scored in Friday’s senior night victory.

“One of the two who didn’t score was Ian Parker who is out for the season with a torn ACL,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

“Ian went out and took a ceremonial kickoff before the game started and came off to nice applause.”

Quick lead for Sequim

The Wolves wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring in the third minute.

“Mike McAleer crossed it and Mathys [Tanche] had a flick header for goal,” Brasher said.

McAleer was the recipient of a Chris Morgan cross in the 14th minute.

“Chris Morgan took it down the right side, crossed it in and McAleer headed it in,” Brasher said.

Sequim led 2-0 at halftime when Morgan scored what Brasher felt was the backbreaking goal.

“Forty-third minute on a free kick, Chris Morgan took it from the right side, it hit the wind and it went into the upper 90 and that kind of deflated them, I think,” Brasher said.

Tanche added his second goal in the 58th, taking a Ryan Tolberd pass and finishing on a breakaway.

Adrian Funston was fouled and earned a penalty kick in the 62nd minute that Rudy Franco converted for a 5-0 lead.

Sean Weber scored off of a Reid Parker cross in the 70th.

Freshman Ethan Knight was fouled and earned a late penalty that was taken and converted by Brandon Benson for the final tally.

Brasher named Tanche as the man of the match for his two scores and also said Knight and Parker played well off the bench.

Sequim (11-0-0, 13-0-2) will seek to close out an unbeaten regular season with a win over Kingston (4-7-0, 5-9-0) on Monday.

Forks 9, Raymond 1

FORKS — The Forks soccer team took a step closer to an Evergreen 1A championship with a 9-1 wipeout of Raymond, a new 2B team in the league.

Seth Johnson scored two goals for the Spartans. Sophomore Martin Silva also scored two goals.

Hugo Sandoval scored a goal and had two assists, one on a corner kick that was headed in by Silva. Also scoring goals were freshman David Contreras, Tony Flores, Luis Perez and Teo Ayala.

The Spartans (9-1, 10-3) head down to Ilwaco (1-9, 1-9) on Monday to play another new 2B member of the Evergreen 1A soccer league. If Forks wins that match, the Spartans will clinch an Evergreen 1A championship.

However, coach Joe Morton said the leaders of the team are telling the players that they consider the real league championship to be at home Friday against second-place Elma (8-3, 9-5-1).

“They want it to be dramatic,” Morton said.

The Spartans begin postseason play on May 6, hosting a game as either the Evergreen No. 1 or No. 2 seed. They will play either the Trico No. 3 or No. 4 seed.

Klahowya 1, Port Townsend 0

PORT TOWNSEND — Three times the Redhawks went up against Olympic League 1A champion Klahowya this season and all three times they lost by one goal, with two of the games decided in overtime.

The Redhawks suffered their third heartbreaking loss to the Eagles on Friday, falling 1-0 in the second overtime. Port Townsend previously lost to Klahowya 1-0 and 3-2 in overtime this season.

That’s how close the Redhawks came to winning the Olympic 1A championship. As it is, Port Townsend will settle as the second-place team in the league and a trip to the playoffs.

“It was senior night. A really good crowd. The match was evenly played,” said coach Robert Cantley. “We couldn’t make our chances count when it mattered.”

The Redhawks had 16 shots to the Eagles’ eight, with one Port Townsend shot going off the crossbar.

Defensively, “we pretty much dealth with everything they threw at us,” Cantley said.

“Our guys were slumped on the turf after they scored,” Cantley said, adding he wants to see that kind of passion from his players.

The Redhawks have been close all season. In addition to the three close Klahowya matches, Port Townsend played 2A juggernaut Sequim to a 2-0 loss. The Redhawks have also tied two 2A teams — Bremerton (a playoff team) and Olympic — and beat the likely Evergreen 1A champion Forks this season.

“I’m very proud of how we’re playing overall,” Cantley said.

Port Townsend (2-3, 4-5-2) has one final regular season match at Chimacum (0-4, 0-11-0) at 4 p.m. Monday, then they prepare for postseason. As the No. 2 seed from the Olympic 1A League, the Redhawks will play at the No. 3 seed from the Nisqually 1A League on Saturday. That team will be Vashon, Bellevue Christian or Charles Wright, which are all tied for first in the Nisqually.
