Girls soccer

Port Angeles 9, Coupeville 3

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls’ soccer offense was clicking on all cylinders in a 9-3 win over Coupeville.

The Roughriders’ Kyrsten McGuffey had two goals and an assist, all in the first half as the Riders scored three goals in the first 16 minutes. Sierra Robinson also had two goals, while Summer Olsen and Delaney Wenzl also scored. Defender Saige Hefton also got her first-ever goal in varsity soccer.

Emily Boyd and Brooklyn Alton scored goals for the Riders in the second half.

“We really showed what we can do offensively in this game. We have speed and a nose for the goal. However, we have also given up an average of three goals a game over the last three games,” said Riders coach Scott Moseley. “That has to be cleaned up before we get into our final league games.”

Port Angeles (4-2, 6-4) sits in third place in the Olympic League, 2A Division, one-half game ahead of Sequim. The Riders host a Kingston team looking for its first win at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Volleyball

Coupeville 3, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles volleyball girls are still looking for their first non-tournament win after falling to Coupeville.

While the Wolves won 3-0, the Thursday match was much closer than the score would indicate. The Roughriders made Coupeville work for as the final score was 25-17, 25-22, 25-23.

Riders coach Christine Halberg said Port Angeles had some problems handling Coupeville’s serving at times.

“They served very well. We played pretty well. We were able to get them on their heels at times,” she said.

Halberg said that while the Riders, who don’t have much varsity experience, can go on runs, they are struggling to finish games. “We weren’t able to capitalize. That’s kind of been our story this year,” she said.

Devin Edwards led the Riders with six kills, while Natalie Steinman had 11 assists and Aeverie Politika had three aces.

Port Angeles (0-8, 0-10) next hosts Kingston at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
